Mom and Dad
Jul. 21st, 2009 10:20 amMy parents are here in town, visiting from Georgia where they've been living since, I think, about 1986. They moved down there from Chicago for Dad's internship for graduate school and they discovered, hey, they can golf year round. So they settled there, and they've been very happy. Mom has continued to play her cello in local orchestras, they've traveled, and they've gotten involved with Rotary, Habitat for Humanity, their church, and ushering at the local concert hall so that they can attend concerts for free. But my sisters and I are in Minneapolis, my brother is in New York, and they don't have any family close by. They're getting up into their eighties, and perhaps the constant leaden hints along the lines of, "Wouldn't it be nice to be closer to your grandkids?" have borne fruit. They've always come up in the summer (since it gets so hot in Georgia then) and at Christmas time and stayed with one of my sisters (my house doesn't have a guest room) but finally, they've decided to take the plunge and buy some property here in Minneapolis.
They found an absolutely beautiful condominium: it's a corner unit with two screened in porches and three bedrooms. They made an offer, which was snapped up that same day. So they'll close on it next month and they'll be officially living here part of the year. I'm just thrilled.
My parents are a great role model for being active and busy and interested in life around them in their retirement years (example: my Dad just left town to fly off for a one week Spanish immersion course especially tailored for people doing Spanish church ministry).
I've been following the twitter feed of a lovely woman in England, Ivy Bean, who is 104, but isn't letting that slow her down very much. (Check out that link to see the pictures of her latest day trip to Blackpool.) She's curious about new technologies and has gotten involved with Facebook and Twitter. I hope to follow her example, along with those of my parents, as I think ahead to my golden years.
