It's -9 degrees Fahrenheit, and the windchill makes it feel like -33 degrees Fahrenheit.

Okay, I'm going to the kitchen to get one of those hazelnut coffee mixes. And for once I'm not going to care about the trans fat in it.

As one Minnesotan to another, thanks for the warning- I would have forgotten my hat, else.

I've been meaning to ask you, actually- when you went to St. Olaf College, did the library have a board of pictures and weird stuff by Jean Q. Jacques on the third floor? Or is J.J. a new phenomenon?

No, they didn't not that I remember--but you realize that was quite a long time ago!

*laughs* True, but I thought I'd ask. J.J. likes to give the impression that he's been around forever- now I've got a bead on him.

New comment from a new anonymous user... This cold front needs to go away already. Imagine we're doing the happy dance where I am just because it will no longer be -30 -something degrees Celsius tomorrow (-46 C with the wind-chill) but -20 Celsius. Yay.

Anyway, I just ambled on over here after 'Googling' you (is that *really* a verb now??!) because I'd once read 'Free Day' as a youngester in '2041', the Jane Yolen collection of Sci-Fi tales. Picked up the book from the library recently and totally enjoyed 'Free Day' all over again. I am of the opinion that it is the best story in the bunch. Thanks for writing it.

Well, isn't that a nice surprise--someone who looks me up because of "Free Day," and what's more, remembers it fondly, too! It's actually the very first story I ever wrote with an eye towards publication. I wrote it when I was 22, for the writing class where I ended up meeting my husband. Anyway, thanks for dropping me a line! And stay warm.

Cheers,
Peg
