It was a bit ironic that at the end of the article about the book, MSN had links to several articles on mothering which seemed like just the sort of thing the authors of the book feel mothers are being overloaded by:

• How to be a good mother — without mom's example
• Why you need to confirm a medical diagnosis
• How hope can inspire healing
• How to make feeding time, fun time with your kids
• Tips for toilet training tots
• 'A Very Hungry Girl'
• Healthy fast food choices
• 'The Heart of the Matter'

I noticed that too. Apparently MSN didn't. :)

Flisting in - I just bought this today after reading the same article. It's very funny so far - good, weighty material but kept light with one or two fun moments per page. Shaping up to be a good read.

That the idealization of motherhood oppresses women is nothing new. That it is still a problem three or four decades after the resurgent feminist movement of the 60's and 70's clearly identified it as such...that is disturbing. Seems I've spent the last twenty years lamenting the fact that mass society has been living as if the 1970's never happened. I have been a feminist holdout in a sea of backlash. That's probably why my son has turned out all right, all things considered. ;-)

It's like dealing with the corporate culture: You may not be able to singlehandedly change the institution, but you can take charge of your own mind and attitudes and live by your own lights, not by the blinding glare of media manipulations.

Remind me to tell my mum she did a good job raising my sister and I, and to thank her for her efforts. o.O

Thanks to that excerpt and you calling attention to it, that book is now sitting on my desk.

Definitely seems to be worth the read (what I've managed so far).

Thanks for the heads up on that one.
