Perhaps for the same reason my almost seven-year-old prefer her hair crunchy and crusted over with Hi-C and cereal bar crumbs. It's some weird kid thing, and I suspect it's something the world may never know the answer to!
Well, at least you know she likes it. I was just telling my husband this morning about the rose-colored pants and vest outfit that I had in junior high. I loved it so much I sometimes wore it twice a week.
Ah, well do I remember the clothes I loved and wanted to wear every single fricking day. When I was seven, for example, it was a matching periwinkle sweatsuit with a whole arctic-type scene with polar bears on the front of the sweatshirt and an igloo on the knee of the sweatpants.
The best, though, would have to be the story I overheard on the subway once, of a girl who had a t-shirt her father gave her that she wore constantly when she was little. It said "This girl is different" the front, which is all very well and good, but then it had a bunch of stick figures having sex all over the back. Looking back, she found this no end odd. O_o
Because she likes it. Because it makes her look the way she wants to look. Because it's familiar. Because she hasn't integrated a worldview that says there's something wrong with doing it. Because she's a kid. Because she's a girl. Because she's Delia. Take your pick.
Because I'm sick of looking at it. Because it is covered with dirt, syrup and peanut butter. And, ya know, that bugs me. I finally kidnapped it long enough to wash it. She put it right on again as soon as it got out of the dryer. Argh.
The dirt, syrup, and peanut butter is certainly good reason to kidnap and wash the sweater. But as for your being sick of looking at it--being a number of years farther into this job, I am going to give some totally unsolicited advice, which you are of course free to disregard: The more you can ignore your child's appearance, the better the parent/child relationship will be. Health and safety matter; all else is simply style.
P.S. The Babe went through a phase of wearing leggings or tights on her head, as "pants hair." (This was when she had very short hair, after she took a scissors to it.) She went everywhere that way.
At least it's just a sweater:) When I was younger I wore a blindingly neon yellow shirt as often as I possibly could. Don't worry, Delia will eventually like something else just as much, just hope it's not neon:P
If I'm wearing a sweater, with a t-shirt underneath, it doesn't tend to get dirty unless I spill something on it, the t-shirt keeps it clean.
(Wearing a sweater with a t-shirt under is what I did all my life in Britain in the winter, where houses are not heated the way they are in NorAm.)
So I could easily wear a sweater for eight days or even longer, and the reason for doing that would be familiarity, comfort, liking how it looks, and saving the trouble of thinking in the morning. I've also done the thing where I put it back on as soon as it was dry -- and in fact I'd still do that. I get terribly attached to my sweaters and when, after ten or fifteen years or even less, they wear out, I'm reluctant to admit it and find it hard to part with them.
I also tend to buy identical and near-identical shirts and t-shirts so the blue shirt I'm wearing today is deeply similar to the one I was wearing yesterday and also to the one I'll be wearing tomorrow.
If other people get tired of me wearing the same things all the time they haven't mentioned it. I suppose they're used to it, or maybe just polite.
I'm not sure if I'm going in the direction of "so this isn't necessarily a bad thing as long as it's clean" or "do feel free to use me as an Awful Warning". ("And if you don't watch out, Delia, you'll end up as bad as Jo!")

Date: 2004-02-22 08:25 pm (UTC)I also had a favorite jumper (still do), and just lived in it until it got dirty. Kidnapping it to wash every so often is a good plan, though.
