Fiona has invented a nonsense language for herself, which, with pretty egotism, she has named "Fio" (which is pronounced "Pho.") Speaking Fio means jabbering syllables at her sister, who gamely speaks them right back to her, often at dinnertime.

I wonder how long this interest in Fio will last. It's been several weeks, and there have been no signs of it tapering off yet.

Reminds me - when I was 10, I met another kid at the hotel where my mom and I were on vacation. We used to hang out together and speak a fake foreign language (jibberish, of course) in order to make people think we were from some exotic place. When I was 14, I had a friend make a more serious effort to invent a language (with vocabulary, syntax, etc) which, of course, went nowhere. I suppose it's some sort of rite of passage of sorts - having something that's your own and exclusive; grownups not allowed.

Sure you're not my friend Dawn, Debbie? We used to do that too. *grins*

God, my son has been doing this for years, but his language ("Bennish") is a mixture of grunts and sign language.

The folks who tested him for the MG program assured us that he is scarily smart, with a very high IQ.

Fiona is probably a genius, but at times like this that can be little comfort. ;) This too shall pass. (We hope; I wonder whether teaching my son REAL sign language will jolt him out of this.)

Has she showed any interest in creating a dictionary?

Will second the suggestion that Fiona is a budding genius. J.R.R. Tolkien (as you probably know) invented two or three nonsense languages with his young cousins as a child, so there is some sort of precedent, at least.

Take her for some pho. See if you can get her to eat it based on the name. Then you'll have one member of the family to take to Quang's. Delia will want in on the action, so there's two....

Well, it was a nice fantasy. I feel so bad for your family-restricted diet. :)
