We went to the midnight showing, although, infuriatingly, they had some kind of problem with the projector and the movie started an hour late. I loved it.

I can see the point that the critics made, that chopping the book into two movies meant that this one didn't have the shape of a completed story. Tough. I don't care. I'm a fan of the book, and the fact that the film makers had more time and room to tell the story, the complete story more than made up for that in my mind. Because the movie was true to the book, a lot of problems some of the critics had were problems that many fans had with the book. Yeah the camping stuff goes on a long time. It's supposed to go on a long time, it's supposed to be frustrating. That's a large part of the reason that Ron leaves.

I loved the added scenes: Hermione obliviating her parents, the dance in the tent. I've seen some fans carp about the dance ("Kloves ships Harry/Hermione too much! It isn't true to the book!"). No, I buy it. And I also buy nekkid Riddle-Harry and Riddle-Hermione kissing in the horcrux vision I went back and checked the scene as written. They do indeed kiss in that scene. And as for the nekkid part, I can absolutely buy it; I'm sure that Ron's agonized vision, springing from his own insecurities and egged on by the malevolence of the horcrux, was even more explicit.

The three principals absolutely sold me. They were exquisitely perfect, to my mind. I expected to cry when Dobby died as I did when I read that scene in the book, but I didn't. Perhaps I was too tired by that point. What really walloped me in the gut, what made me sob my heart out, was when Ron left. The things that he said, the bitter and cruel accusations, the betrayal in Harry's eyes as he told the friend he'd loved for years, the person he most trusted, "Go, then," hit way, way too personally for me.

Malfoy Manor, and the entrance of Snape, the deterioration in the Malfoy family: perfect. Draco's wince as a Hogwarts teacher was killed in front of him: perfect. Neville's mouthing off at the Deatheater: perfect. Harry's farewell to 4 Privet Drive was awesome. The 7 Potters was awesome. The wedding, Godric's Hallow, the Ministry, and the visit to Xeno's were all awesome, start to finish. And the story of the three brothers! What exquisite scenic design.

A couple objections to the events at the second visit to Malfoy Manor: Ron should have been more distressed at Hermione being tortured. And why the HELL didn't Wormtail die?

I deeply regretted the truncating of Lupin's story arc. Even when they chop the story into two movies, there isn't room for everything, dammit.

Oh, yeah. And they didn't bury Dobby deeply enough. This absurdly bothers me.

So...deeply satisfied. Can't wait to see it again. And even more, to see Part 2.
