Spring

Today, unexpectedly, the temperature shot up to 66 degrees (Farhenheit). I went home from work and poked about in the garden to see what might be coming up. Hyacinths. Strawberries. Sedum. Day lilies. No asparagus or tulips yet. Still, this is extremely hopeful and encouraging.

I've already placed one garden order with the church, and will be placing another with the school. I got four new planters last year which I intend to fill with pansies. Am trying to figure out what to put in the strip of garden by the garage. One year I planted zinnias, which were a wild success. The last two years I've tried a Burpee designed garden, which seemed less successful. I don't think I can put roses there, as it doesn't get sunlight enough hours of the day. It's on the west side of the garage, and is shaded half the day.

Hmm . . .

Lots of work ahead, getting the beds ready and planting. But it feels good, to contemplate the earth waking up and starting to bloom. A hopeful metaphor.

For the west side of the garage - if you like lily of the valley, it does well in partial shade, and it's a perennial. I have a strip north of my house that is filled with lilies of the valley in May. They tend to take over, which is good for a lazy gardener like me.
