Aw, dammit. A.S. Byatt is going to be at the Ted Mann Concert Hall, giving a free lecture on writing historical fiction. When Swans was a finalist for the Mythopoeic, it was up against her Elementals. [Peter Beagle beat us both out in the end and so was the one who got to take home the Aslan statue].

And I can't go because Rob has inventory at the store tomorrow night.

Damn, damn, damn. Have I actually gone for a week or two without mentioning how much I hate Rob's employer?

*goes to look up babysitters in palm pilot*

Would it be good to post about this on tlc to people who hate her comments on HP can go heckle?

Er, probably not. Rabid fangirls = not a good way to change her opinion.

I hope you get a babysitter.
I love A. S. Byatt and I am sure she'd be a fascinating lecturer. Have you seen her before?

If you do see her, please post your thoughts.

No, I've not heard her before, and I haven't read her fiction. I've read a couple of her essays, a very impressive one called "Ice, Snow and Glass" in Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, which gave me a lot to think about re: the ice palace book. I also commented here"> on her dismissive essay about the Harry Potter books. Obviously, I didn't agree with that one.

I heard her read in the mid-90s at the (then) Hungry Mind bookstore -- very entertaining.

Don't know why she's anti-Harry Potter, but I do know she appreciates Georgette Heyer, Patrick O'Brian, and Tolkien.
