if I'm going to spend that kind of money, I'd probably prefer to get an iPod.

Decisions, decisions. . .

Edited to add: Yeah, and I know I know I know that the iPod would be basically only for the music. But I'd love it.

Get an iPod! Get a 40GB iPod with a pink skin and get it engraved and upload...

*restrains self* Sorry. As the last member of the fandom who doesn't own an iPod (or, it seems, a computer with a hard drive larger than 6 GB), I have to live vicariously through my friendslist.

I have a Palm Pilot and an iPod: if you have to choose one, by all means get the iPod, and get the one with the most memory you can afford. I am one VERY satisfied iPod user. (Though the Apple ear buds suck: buy a pair of Sony headphones to go with it.)

I admit to being a practical person. How much do you rely on your Palm on a daily basis? My husband has the memory of a sieve, and his Palm is the only thing that's worked for him. Sticky notes, phone reminders - nothing works. A Palm that beeps at him - that's shown a much greater rate of success. It's also his phone and his text pager, all in one.

iPods are very cool, I admit - although I don't have one. However, if you have a computer that plays CDs or a portable CD player, then that works, too. iPods (weird to deliberately not capitalise the first thing in a sentence) seem a much greater use when you're away from electrical systems for awhile - commuting on trains, traveling, studying (or working) in cafes, etc.

Well, you can't readily type into an iPod.

No iPod here, either. Not even a current-tech working laptop (though I do still have my *first* laptop -- a CP/M computer).

If the question is iPod vs. PDA (Palm or whatever), I'd say they address completely different needs, so the decision between them will have to be based on which of the needs they fill are more important to you.

The iPod is useless for carrying schedule and address information, isn't a good way to read an ebook, doesn't let you take notes you can easily transfer to your computer later. Those are all things I find very useful.

The iPod is useful for carrying bulk data between computers, and for playing music.

No doubt both are also useful for various (mostly different) other things that I haven't thought of just now.

I have both. I take my Palm with me when I remember it, or when my admin MAKES ME. But the iPod never ever leaves my site.

And you can put audiobooks on it :)

My recommendation is to get a cheap PDA now (I bought a Zire for my nephew for under $100) because you need it, and save your pennies for an iPod, because even an iPod mini costs $250.

When the first hint of an iPod came out, I began saving. I bought one in Sept. '02, going all out (in for a penny...); Fiddler has 20 GB of space and "How can I keep from singing?" reflects at me when I turn him over.

I have never regretted a single penny. Here is every album I thought worth purchasing. Here are my ideosyncratic lists of songs I want to listen to, updated on whim. Here my hodgepodge collection is presented to me by artist, by album, by genre. If I can conceive of a song, I can play it.

There's usually some song running in a continual track on the subwoofer of my subconscious. Fiddler manifests my internal soundtrack.

w00t!

I don't yet own a PDA (even though I love gadgets). It's hard to do without something you've accustomed yourself to; it's like constantly feeling for a lost tooth. You probably are thinking to yourself every few hours, "I'll just put that in my ... no, wait, it died, :(."

I completely sympathize with your dilemma.

But Lord, the iPod is sublime.

Hope your choice includes both :),
Meredith
