is indeed worth all the raves. I tried it today, and my pickiest eaters gave it a thumbs up. Delia rated it an A+. Rob said he wouldn't have been able to tell that it had tofu in it at all. Here's the recipe:

1 baked 9-inch pie crust, basic pastry or graham cracker or crushed cookie or whatever you like.

1 14-oz box of silken tofu, soft or firm but not extra-firm (extra-firm is very hard on the blender).

12 oz bittersweet baking chocolate or chocolate chips. The better the chocolate, the better the pie.

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Melt the chocolate in a double boiler or in the microwave. Set it aside to cool. Dump the tofu and any attendant liquid (there won't be much) into a blender. Blend until it's creamy. This takes longer than you think it will. When the chocolate is warm, not hot, pour it into the blender with the tofu and blend some more, until the color of the mixture is uniform. This will also probably take longer than you think it will. Add the vanilla; blend again until you get tired or are sure that the vanill is well mixed in. Pour the mixture into the pie crust, smooth the top, refrigerate for an hour or so, serve. It's good with whipped cream or a vegan equivalent.

Would a food processor be faster? Or would it not do as good a job?

Don't know. All I have is a blender, but it worked fine. Try it, and report back.

I just tried it with a food processor, it was very quick. And very yummy (that is, the un-set pie filling is very yummy.)

Now I'll dread having to do it the "slow way' in the future with a blender, the Cuisinart's owner is moving to another state.

I'm sure it would work; my food processor has always turned tofu into a formidable state of creaminess in a matter of seconds.

I never thought that vegan chocolate cream pie would be so easy; thanks!

I don't have a blender--but I do have an electric hand mixer. Will try next week when I get the chocolate and soft tofu. I got extra firm today to use in dinners.

The original recipe is from somebody with the user name of jennyfeet, over at Vegetarians in Paradise. The commentary is mine. I fell up on this recipe with vast delight after fooling around with a number of others that were more complicated and had oil or blackberry jam or other odd ingredients. Whoever came up with it is a genius.

No sugar? REally? With only bittersweet chocolate chips?

Hmmm. I may have to try this.

Alton Brown has a similar recipe, which has honey and coffee liqueur, and just chocolate chips.

I've thought about trying it, so maybe I'll try yours and then his later. :)
