An interesting article about Tolkien scholars searching for "legitimacy" in academe.

I've certainly noted the tension between the academic and fannish impulse in approaching Tolkien. I see both sides of this myself, as a recovering scholar and a rabid fan. I like to read both types of works.

And the Chronicle held a chat (http://chronicle.com/colloquylive/2004/06/tolkien/) on the Tolkien scholarship subject today as well.

Hi Peg,
Thanks for posting this; I've forwarded it to a discussion group I'm on and also sent it to theonering.net since I didn't see it there. --Chris
