My peonies are blooming. One bush has white flowers and the other, rose. I cut four rose-colored blooms, put them in a cobalt-blue vase, and then in a flash of truly divine inspiration, cut sprigs of blue and white lobelia from the hanging basket outside the back door, and tucked them in around the peonies so that they foamed over the edge of the vase. They look beautiful together.

It has been a sun-kissed afternoon, all too rare in Minneapolis lately. I have been virtuous, working out, doing laundry and working on Lois' manuscript, when all I want to do is loll on the front porch with a glass of iced tea.

I have decided, as an experiment, to give up sugar for the month of June, to see if that might nudge me off the plateau I've been stuck at for awhile on weight loss. Well, aside from a half teaspoon a day I will allow myself in my morning coffee. It's been okay for the first couple of days, but we went to my nephew's graduation open house yesterday (congratulations, Michael!), and my sister offered a plate of leftover brownies to us when the open house was over. I accepted them, reasoning they could go in the girls' lunches. They're sitting on my kitchen counter and they've been talking to me all day. Nevertheless, I have ignored them, and feel rather proud of my willpower. Still, it will be easier when the rest of the family eats them all up.

The karate tournament went okay, although neither of the girls placed. Still, they competed, which is well and good.

Workout today (two of them):
Sharon Mann: Works Cardio: Kickboxing
Karen Voight: Sleek Physique: Yoga Stretch

I love peonies - I need to find a place to put some in.

Have you tried Splenda in your coffee? I couldn't give up sugar in my tea and decided to give it a try. It's made from sugar, so it actually tastes like it (unlike those nasty saccharin/aspartame things), and you only have to use a little bit (which is good, because it's on the expensive side). Though half a teaspoon of sugar a day is hardly indulgent of you. :)
