How many of you follow role-playing games on LiveJournal? Which ones do you think are particularly well written? And on the ones that you follow, which characters are the best?
I only follow nocturne_alley and think it's brilliant. I love how the characters (and players) have developed themselves and I adore the storylines. You can tell that a lot of time and effort is involved in everything having to do with NA. :)
Well, I have much love for *all* the characters, but in particular I love just_harry and potterstinks--I really love how NA has developed their relationship and I adore their interactions. Other characters that I adore are lupercus, seamus_f, petitemillicent, and potions_master. Lately there have been some excellent threads between Seamus and Harry and the dynamic of their friendship is wonderful to watch. I also *adore* Lupin--his relationship with Harry and his love for Sirius is just wonderful. Snape is full of snark, and so is Millicent, and the friendship between Draco and Millicent is absolutely hysterical at times and I'm a sucker for anything that can make me laugh. :)
I follow quite a few Harry Potter RPG comms. My personal favorites at the moment are godrics_hollow, which is set in the 1970s and as such has a certain tragic they're-all-gonna-die/go-evil/go-crazy air constantly lurking beneath the (really funny) humor, and seen_unforeseen, which I follow in no small part because I think it keeps Harry, Ron, and Hermione's close friendship so intact.
(Allow me to pimp my weekly summaries (http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=susan_voight&keyword=NA+summaries&filter=all) of nocturne_alley, posted every Wednesday night at fandomcrack.)
As for the original question--nocturne_alley is the only one I have time to follow, though there are some others on that model [*] that I might in a less busy world.
[*] I like the way players treat their public journals as just that, public journals. I'm sure I could get into LJ RPGs with other premises, but it would take more effort.
I've never gotten into any except sunnydale_socks, which was actually written up in an LA newspaper (turns out the reporter played a Sock himself), based on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. It was started when someone just out of the blue started a journal for the First Evil, the villain of Buffy's last season, and a bunch of other folks joined in. They did a really good job, I thought, of capturing the voices of the characters. I particularly liked the original Giles (the current Giles is okay, but there are occasionally grammar and spelling errors that Giles would never make and that sort of makes my teeth itch), the original Spike (who has just been replaced) and the current Buffy (I think she may be the second person to play Buffy). They were sticking pretty closely to the shows, and now that both shows are ended, it will be interesting to see where they go with their stories.
It's never actually occurred to me before to go see what else is out there.
I follow nocturne_alley and seen_unforeseen. I've heard others, like TWT/TIN, are well done, but I don't have time for any others. (I *cough* don't really have time for these!)
I think they are both well handled overall.
Favourite characters:
NA: lupercus, petitemillicent, knight_to_h3, la_pensee and just_harry. I'm torn about potterstinks - I don't *like* him, but I think he's well played, and the same with blonde_narcissa/purestblood. Actually, I like Seamus and Dean, too. I also like some of the characters better in their *interactions* - like Lupin and Harry are majorly magnified in their natural appeal when they're playing off each other, also Lupin and Seamus, etc.
I follow seen_unforeseen and nocturne_alley religiously. I think they're both well-written and the characters are very much IC and follow canon, seen_unforeseen particularly (as NA began way before OotP came out and all that ;). Everyone and their brother reads NA, as they should, but those who are not reading SU are truly missing out on one of the best HP RPGs on LJ (next to NA, of course! :D). I can't really say which chars I prefer over the others as it's kind of a conflict of interest, but I love them all equally!
I also follow this_is_now and am particularly fond of the Slytherin interactions. They're not cookie-cutter Slyths by any means and all have very interesting-and real!-relationships with one another. ♥
I used to also follow triumvirate but I don't anymore. Although a handful of characters are very canon, they are grossly overshadowed by minor chars who are, imo, a bit too much and deviate wildly from canon. If you can put that aside and weed through it to find the chars that are canon, there is some very good rping there.
I was not putting an RPG down, merely pointing out that while there is good writing in one, there are things that detract from it...but all in all, as I said, there is some very good rping and writing there. It's an honest rec coming from my POV.
I like to read Nocturne Alley regularly, and try to keep up with Triumvirate and TWT/TIN when i can. I think petitemillicent is genius on NA, as well as Lupin and Snape. :)
I follow nocturne_alley and both this_is_now and that_was_then, as well as their fan communities. NA amuses me, but since I came in rather late to the game, I don't hold strong feelings about it. The Sleep Duel was a pretty good arc, though.
TIN/TWT (both recommended by slytherincess, BTW) are an interesting mix. TIN has more plot to me; TWT has a lot of interesting character moments and characters really filling out the relationships between each other. And since they run concurrently, it's very interesting how the future predicts the past, as in the case of the Great Noodle Incident.
TIN also handles houses other than Gryffindor really well, and strives to break hearts with every other post. :)
What tenebris said above me about thatwasthen / this_is_now. The two are entertwined -- TWT is marauder era and TIN is sixth!year, in the same universe. The characters are hilarious (no way could I pick a favourite) and the plots are excellent.
And I feel duty-bound to plug Twilight Fading, which started yesterday, if only because I'm in it. (It's my first time role-playing, and I'm playing Madam Pince.)
GODRICS_HOLLOW MAN. It's just a blast to read and the players are hilarious to interact with. My <3 for teh_seeker knows no bounds and I adore their Frank/Alice and their Remus and Sirius interaction and Ludo... umm let's just say everyone because I don't want to hurt feelings.
I also like triumvirate because even if you aren't a trio shipper, which isn't everybody's cup of tea, not even my own really, all the characters are still interesting and unique from the Hufflepuffs to the teachers (Oh my god Lupin and Snape are so awesome).
Don't know why you're asking, but I find it is always easier to start reading an RPG as it is starting up. However, some RPGs have excellent histories written up, and/or synopsis communities.
I enjoy triumvirate and nocturne_alley, but as NA gets plenty of press, I will plug Triumvirate. It started almost exactly a year ago and features both slash and het relationships. The game is centered around Harry, Hermione and Ron, who have made their way into a group relationship.
Triumvirate is in a very exciting place right now because the students of Harry's generation are about to leave school, which practically makes it a whole new game. There are slash and het pairings and, yes, well-fleshed minor characters.
I think you'll find that most RPGs have to expand on minor characters to fill out the game. As most minor characters in canon have no characterization, I always find it interesting to see in what directions players take them. In that respect, they are all like Original Characters. However, if the players stick close to the Harry Potter "world," you will not come to see their characters as the much dreaded OCs. :D
I hope I somewhat answered your question. Let us know if you decide to follow one and find one you like! I respect your taste in reading. :D
I'll plug hp_dungeons, which is the RPG that I follow obsessively.. What I love about the Dungeons is that all of the plots are so amazingly well thought out; sometimes it really feels more like a huge WIP moreso than a RPG. All of the characters are incredible in their special way, and are written amazingly, but especially grand are quidditch_prat and cauldron_brew (both played by hp_femme) and redgoldpride and persuade_me (both played by cursive). What makes these 4 characters special (and even to a greater extent their authors) is that the characters have made me ship pairings that I would never normally ship (Ron/Harry and Snape/Draco). Not any person could get me to do that. I also have to give a shout out to snuff_dog (Sirius Black), who I think is the most in-canon RPG character I have ever had the pleasure of reading.
Although I love all the characters (I squee everytime we see a minor who hasn't posted in a while), my favorite is by far potterstinks. The level of detail the player puts into the character just astounds me. I also quite like just_harry, because the characterization feels so RIGHT to me. And petitemillicent is, of course, God.
As the end of NA appears to be nigh, I'm starting to check out other HP RPGs, but haven't found one yet that has captivated me. I don't think that's the fault of the players of those particular RPGs, however. Rather, I have simply spent so much time following and obsessing over NA (two plus years, man) that it is canon to me, and any other characterization takes me aback because it feels odd. So I might have to wait a bit before getting into another RPG.
But I do plan to find another to follow, because the mechanics of RPG storytelling fascinate me, and work for me in a way that, say, movies do not. It's the same reason I love TV shows. There's so much room for character growth, and continuity, and detail. You can't get that in a movie.
Oh dear. I have thrown large paragraphs on this subject at the screen again. Whenever shall I stop?
