This is a really excellent blog post by my friend
naomikritzer (a fellow local SF/Fantasy writer who is getting a solid reputation as a political writer; she does a deep dive every election examining state and local races). Naomi's one of my closest friends; I have coffee with her every Friday. Anyway, she does a great job here of laying out a timeline of events and presenting evidence about who the actors are and what is their motivation. What do you think of her analysis?

It's not quite the same level in other cities as Mpls/St Paul, but there is certainly an element of, "Protest starts peacefully, cops escalate protest, violence happens, other people take advantage of the violence for their own purposes."
