Just sent a fan note of appreciation to Verlyn Flieger, (Splintered Light). I just finished The Silmarillion today for the first time, and yes, I was right: reading Flieger's book added immensely to my ability to finish and really appreciate The Silmarillion. Whereas before I wasn't able to finish it, this time I enjoyed it intensely.

I'll be interested to see if she responds.

good to hear. I just bought Splintered Light. I am a Silm fan, but it took the Books of Lost Tales to make me love the stories as much as LOTR.

Verlyn is a wonderful, wonderful person. We met her at a Mythcon and lured her into also going to the ICFA for a couple-three years. I'm hoping to see her at Mythcon in Ann Arbor, but who knows? I'm sure she'll respond if she at all has time.

I read Splintered Light for the first time about a month ago and just loved it.

Did you know that Fleiger is one of the editors (along with Michael Drout) of the new Tolkien Studies journal?

I have to friend you, by the way. Anybody who makes avocado ice cream has to be interesting.

Tolkien studies: Yes, I was reading about it on her website. I got a lovely reply from her tonight to the appreciative e-mail I sent to her about Splintered Light.

They have an introductory rate for individuals who subscribe to Tolkien Studies for three years (*am awfully tempted*)
