What your talking about reminds me most (at least the way you're describing it here) of Harry and Dumbledore and the end of OotP. Harry is hurt and angry and just wants to hate and die and never care about anyone again, but Dumbledore explains to him that the things that make him want to withdraw from the world, to have a heart of stone, are the very things that make him care and that will make him care again, to have a heart of flesh. Anyway, I just instantly thought of that when I read this. Very interesting concept.
