Ugh

So this morning, when Rob's alarm went off to get him up for work, it interrupted my dream, where I had deliberately left a laptop computer behind somewhere, knowing that it was going to explode. And someone was killed. I was hazy on why I did it. Some political reason. And the police were closing in on me, and I called my parents and said I needed to see them, and they said, oh, maybe tomorrow, because we're playing golf this afternoon, and I said, no, no, no, it's an emergency. I have to tell you something awful I've done, and you may never love me again. And then we have to find me a lawyer. And then the alarm woke me up.

And I dropped off to sleep again and immediately started dreaming that I was driving the girls somewhere and got carjacked, and the thief drove away with the girls still strapped into their car seats, screaming. And I knew I would never see them alive again.

I've been listening to the news too much lately.

I intensely dislike the news for that reason. Except that I also love it because I have a deep need to know What's Going On. Unfortunately, What's Going On tends to be disaster, not because the world is bad but because bad news sells more than good news, and the media is a business. Argh!

I am very fond of the Dilbert strip where Dogbert starts a news station only talks about the good things that are happening. If only!

I could never understand why people fall asleep watching the news. Whatever I was last thinking about is usually what I dream about, so news=bad. I just read the paper in the morning.

Oh, I hate those kinds of nightmares! I usually can't get back to sleep until I go into my son's room and make sure he's all right....

I hope the rest of your day is far, far better than your morning's sleep!

Yes, it's definitely better to avoid the television news. If you want weather reports there's always Weather.com, after all. And even when I tried just listening to the news on the Temple U station (WRTI), which isn't really a news station at all but plays classical during the day and jazz at night and simply "borrows" the NPR news whenever they have a little news break, I discovered that NPR is making people wake up to stories about people being beheaded in the Middle East. And yeah, the people who were beheaded have it much tougher than me, but I still think the people at NPR should think about whether seven in the morning, when a lot of people wake up to their clock radios, is the best time of day to air this particular story...

Of course NPR isn't nearly as bad as the local station (the NBC affiliate) that wants to make you think YOUR LIFE WILL BE IN DANGER IF YOU DO NOT WATCH OUR NEWS SHOW. They are definitely in the business of scaring the bejesus out of people. When we recently had flash-flooding in the suburbs the ads strongly implied that you could find yourself in a Johnstown-type situation if you DON'T WATCH OUR NEWS SHOW. And the same thing goes for their reports on the Fairmount Park Rapist and the Local Food Poisoning Danger and the Mold In Schools Crisis, and on and on...
