The triage nurse told us to take her to the ER. I thought of the three fruitless trips we'd made to the doctor, Urgent Care Clinic and Emergency room last week and winced. "We just gave her Tylenol," I said. "Would it be all right to wait to see if if brings her fever down first?"

The nurse said all right, but in any case she should be seen the next day [today].

In an hour, her fever was down to 100.5 F, so we didn't go to the ER. I slept on the floor of her room in a sleeping bag. She woke often, whimpering, staring around in wide-eyed terror at the shadows thrown against her walls from the nightlight. I would soothe her, stroking her sweaty hair, and give her her teddy bear to hold, and she would eventually settle back down to sleep again. Her fever was back up to 103.5 at 3:30 a.m., so I gave her Tylenol again.

I hope that if there were any lice left on her head after yesterday's treatment that the fever roasted the little buggers up.

This morning her temp is 98.7 F. We're off to the clinic momentarily.

Where I am sure that they will tell us (yet again) that it is probably a virus and there is nothing they can do. And we'll get another bill in the mail.

I'm sorry. It all sounds just awful.

Good luck and best wishes to you all.

Yeah, but a virus that sends her fever up THAT high - they should be able to tell you what to do *when* it's that high, to better bring it down to more manageable levels. That's not something to mess around with and claim 'there's nothing you can do'. There *has* to be something you can do about that anyway, even if you can't make the virus itself go away.

Aome is wise. Get more information on palliative care for fevers.

And I hope this all goes away soon. I remember the terror and sorrow of a feverish son, and the enormous relief when the fever broke: my son sighed and fell into a normal sleep. May that come to you soon.

I'm so glad to hear her fever is down. What a terrible night you both had.

This is one long-lived virus, if so. I should think that at this point it would be pinging some warning bells and that perhaps they'll go hunting for a better reason than the "just a virus" catchall, for your sake and Delia's sake as well. The poor thing, and poor you, too, having to deal with it all for so long.

Just a weird thought: is there any way this could be related to the lice, or the medication you're using to kill them? I'm clutching at straws here, and have no idea if this is even possible, but???

I've been keeping an eye on your updates. Your poor baby girl! And how terrifying. I've been keeping her in my thoughts and prayers.

I am wondering along with Misia about what sort of lice treatment is used. I remember Greg Feeley, who did newsletters for a lady who wrote a bestselling pediculosis treatment book, having very strong opinions about the dangers of most anti-lice chemical treatments.

I feel awful for poor Delia, and for you.

I called this AM. Call me back if I can do something. Susan and I and Gavi are going to the Fair tomorrow.... would Fiona like to come with us?

I'd recommend asking a naturopath or herbalist about Delia--I'm not saying ignore what the docs say, but sometimes an alternative practitioner will have ideas that work when nothing else seems to.

*hug* The medical industry is so frustrating. I hope Delia feels better very very very very soon. ASAP as defined in my dictionary, not in my doctor's.
