Appearance this Saturday
Jun. 5th, 2002 08:38 pmSaturday, June 8th, 2002 from 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. I will be at the Amery Public Library in Amery, Wisconsin, with other science fiction writers: Lyda Morehouse, Anna Waltz, and Shari Mann, aka S.N. Arley. We'll be talking about the process of writing science fiction, and answering questions. Books will be available for sale. Refreshments will be provided. For more information call (715) 268-9340.
Lyda Morehouse set this appearance up. Lyda is a local science fiction writer who is extremely hardworking and very committed to both writing good fiction and finding ingenuous ways to market it. I love getting her periodic e-mail announcements: some writers' marketing attempts I find obnoxiously pushy, but Lyda never comes across that way to me; I read her announcements and they get me excited about her work and curious to see what she'll do next.
( Here's a typical example from a recent email of Lyda's, letting her friends know about a TV appearance. ) The way it was set up is typical of the way Lyda finds opportunities and makes them work for her. It's also typical of what I get from an e-mail about Lyda: I learn about something that promotes her career, but in the process, I learned about a cool web site that is of interest to me, as both a writer and a reader.
I can learn a lot from Lyda--and should. I checked out her web site and realized that she has listed this weekend's appearance with all her other upcoming appearances. In contrast, I realized that I hadn't even sent an announcement about this upcoming weekend's event to Dave Lenander (who maintains my web page). I belatedly sent him the announcement tonight, rather too late to do any good, but at least it's a couple of days in advance.
Cheers,
Peg
