Saturday, June 8th, 2002 from 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. I will be at the Amery Public Library in Amery, Wisconsin, with other science fiction writers: Lyda Morehouse, Anna Waltz, and Shari Mann, aka S.N. Arley. We'll be talking about the process of writing science fiction, and answering questions. Books will be available for sale. Refreshments will be provided. For more information call (715) 268-9340.

Lyda Morehouse set this appearance up. Lyda is a local science fiction writer who is extremely hardworking and very committed to both writing good fiction and finding ingenuous ways to market it. I love getting her periodic e-mail announcements: some writers' marketing attempts I find obnoxiously pushy, but Lyda never comes across that way to me; I read her announcements and they get me excited about her work and curious to see what she'll do next.

I'm going to be on TV tonight (6/4) on WCCO (Channel 4) at 6 PM!

Actually, despite what one might hope, they were NOT here because of my personal awesomeness or for any of the many awards for which my book has been nominated. However, it wasn't completely unrelated to my writing, either.

Here's the whole, convoluted story.

Last year, during a routine ego-surf I came across a review someone had done on a site called www.bookcrossing.com. I was intrigued by the site and discovered that what it was, was a kind of "read and release" program for books. A person who wants to get involved registers a book, prints out this little sticker that basically says, "Hey, this is a free book! Read it, pass it on!" and gives instructions how to post a review of the book, and drop it off in some new place for someone ELSE to find and pass it on. Well, I thought it was a really nifty idea, so I registered Archangel Protocol. Unfortunately, no one ever picked up my book (or if they did, they didn't bother to write in). But, with the new book out, I thought I'd try it again.

Well, THIS MORNING I got a random e-mail from the guy who created the web site spamming all the Minnesota people who had EVER registered a book with them saying that WCCO wanted to do a segment on the site and would anyone be interested in being interviewed on TV. He included the contact information for Rick Fuentes. As you can imagine, I was on that phone like a shark to chum.

Then, just to hedge my bets I emailed Rick too. A minute later he called. Could they come out and film me at 12:30? It was 12:00 when they called, I needed a haircut, and I wore crap clothes to work, but I said, "Of COURSE!! I'll meet you at the information desk."

So, they were here filming me, interviewing me, talking about the web site, about books... Then we went and registered FALLEN HOST online and "released" it at the Black Dog (a downtown coffee shop.) They apparently spent some time at the Black Dog hiding out hoping someone would pick it up. I left before anyone did, but it should be a hoot to watch either way.

If you're interested tune in tonight to WCCO (Channel 4) at 6 PM! I can't tell you when EXACTLY it's going to be on during the program, so you might have to watch the whole thing to catch me (sorry). Also, if anyone is willing to make a VCR recording of it, I'd be grateful for extra copies!

--Lyda
The way it was set up is typical of the way Lyda finds opportunities and makes them work for her. It's also typical of what I get from an e-mail about Lyda: I learn about something that promotes her career, but in the process, I learned about a cool web site that is of interest to me, as both a writer and a reader.

I can learn a lot from Lyda--and should. I checked out her web site and realized that she has listed this weekend's appearance with all her other upcoming appearances. In contrast, I realized that I hadn't even sent an announcement about this upcoming weekend's event to Dave Lenander (who maintains my web page). I belatedly sent him the announcement tonight, rather too late to do any good, but at least it's a couple of days in advance.

Cheers,
Peg
