Here's a date which must be celebrated with honor: Today is the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of the first volume of The Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Rings. See an account here of the publishing history at the Writer's Almanac.

Edited to correct Oops. [livejournal.com profile] harpie84 pointed out that the Writer's Almanac had it wrong. The anniversary is actually July 29 (*is embarrassed*). So mark your calendars and we'll celebrate all over ten days from now.
