pegkerr: (But this is terrible!)
I got a call from my Dad yesterday with unexpected news about my mom: she suddenly started having severe gut pain and went to the E.R. My sister called this morning to say she's undergoing surgery this morning. Tentative diagnosis is strangulated bowel, but they won't know until they get in there and see.

I'm sure she's getting good care, but this is still unexpected and unpleasant. And it sucks that Mom and Dad are so far away, with no family close by (they live in Georgia, my brother lives in New York, and my sisters and I are in Minnesota). I'm used to my Mom being indestructible (this is, after all, a woman in her upper 70s who goes to Curves several times a week) and she hasn't had much in the way of health problems up until now.

Hang in there, Mom. Get better.

The problem was a hernia, now repaired. The intestines were intact and didn't need to be sectioned; no diverticulitus. Best possible news, given her symptoms and the first pre-surgery tentative diagnosis.

Looks like she'll be discharged tomorrow afternoon.
