pegkerr: (But this is terrible!)

I got a call from my Dad yesterday with unexpected news about my mom: she suddenly started having severe gut pain and went to the E.R. My sister called this morning to say she's undergoing surgery this morning. Tentative diagnosis is strangulated bowel, but they won't know until they get in there and see.

I'm sure she's getting good care, but this is still unexpected and unpleasant. And it sucks that Mom and Dad are so far away, with no family close by (they live in Georgia, my brother lives in New York, and my sisters and I are in Minnesota). I'm used to my Mom being indestructible (this is, after all, a woman in her upper 70s who goes to Curves several times a week) and she hasn't had much in the way of health problems up until now.

Hang in there, Mom. Get better.

Gah. I can totally sympathize on the "Mom's the in hospital" surprise. I had it last December.

Hopefully, your mom's problem will be as fleeting and minor as that of one of my coworkers a couple years ago -- it was a weird bowel issue that corrected itself before they got in there.

Oh, it hurts not to be able to be there. I hope it gets taken care of quickly and with minimal fuss.

I hope your mother has less trouble than my father did thirty years ago.
He was in the hospital - the doctors told my step-mother 'he's dying, and we can't see why. The only thing we can think of to do is exploratory surgery.' It ended up being that his small intestine had tied itself in a knot. They fixed it during the exploratory surgery, and Dad was fine in a few days.

Yikes. It's hard being far away. The strength your Mom had going into this will likely serve her very well through the surgery and during her recovery.

"Hang in there, Mom. Get better."

Exactly! Hang in there, Peg's Mom. Get better!

Here's hoping for good post surgical news soon.
