I met with my PT for the last time today. I've been pretty faithful about doing the exercises every day, and the pain has decreased in the knee (although it hasn't gone away entirely). She says I've definitely gained strength in my hip muscles and quads. Hamstrings and core need further strengthening. So I have a new regime of exercise to follow, and I'm to do light strength training three times a week, using the weight machines in my office gym.

I can start going back to the easiest karate class (Thursday nights) and see how it goes, with the following restrictions: 1. No sparring. 2. No pivoting unsupported on injured leg. For pivots on that side, use the bar. (Can do the kicks themselves unsupported, once I'm in the pivoted position. Slow kicks are good for building strength.) 3. No spin kicks. 4. Be wary of complicated combinations, i.e., nothing with a bunch of pivots in a row.

I can do pad work (i.e., thrust kick, round kick, defensive side kick, offensive side kick. I can do form. Obviously, if the knee gives me problems with anything, back off and do it more shallowly.

See how it goes and re-evaluate in February, when I see my regular doctor.

I won't go to class tomorrow, because we have another investigate the high schools open house for Delia. And class a week from now is canceled because of Thanksgiving. Two weeks will give me time to work further on strength and flexibility anyway. But starting in December, I go back to karate, at least one class a week.

It's been almost exactly a year--I injured the knee in the Tuesday class before Thanksgiving, doing spin jump kicks. I know I'll suck when I start getting back into it, but getting back to it at all, even on a limited basis, feels like a great victory, and I hope bumping up my activity level will help with both the weight and the depression.

I can't wait.
