That reminds me of that old piece in the New Yorker. A rabbit reached out of a game bag and pulled the trigger on a shot gun - shooting the hunter in the foot.
A friend of mine put down his own dog this year, after it had attacked him -- not out of anger, but out of the belief that a dog should not be allowed to, ever, twice attack a human without provocation. (And maybe not even then; he wasn't clear about that.) I'm glad he wasn't hurt -- even though he did use a firearm to kill the dog.
In this case, I'm certainly amused by the results, and not bothered at all by the injuries to the moron, but I'm not sure I understand why it's okay for the Humane Society to put down animals who they can't place, but not okay for a private individual to do it.
(While I expect and hope that these particular puppies will find homes, it's not exactly news that preposterous numbers of puppies, kittens, and even larger numbers of adult dogs and cats are euthanized every year.)
Is it the messiness of the method? Hard to argue that a shot to the CNS is particularly cruel -- the animal would be dead before it knew it -- although it certainly would be messy.
