I headed to work today, Ice Palaces tucked in my bag, so that I could continue reading and flagging it during lunch and breaks. I wasn't thinking of anything in particular when Morningside by John Gorka came on the radio as I was pulling into work. Listening to it, I thought about the conversation I had with Powers this last weekend, and about how the words are beginning to trickle out again, and I started to cry. I had to take a few minutes to mop myself before heading into the building.

It's really true. After so many years of doubt and heartbreak and silence, I am starting to write again. What Powers helped me understand is that it doesn't really matter if the doubt is still there.

Just keep writing.

Far as I can tell from talking with Established Writers, the doubt will still be there ten books from now.

"Just keep writing."

...they play John Gorka on the radio where you live?

*starts packing.*

By the way, Morningside is my all-time favorite Gorka song. I played it obsessively through 2002 and most of 2003. Bad years: not sure I would have survived without that album.

Don't want to waste what I have to give
In all of the time that I've left to live
Don't want to waste what I have to give
In any of the time that I've got left
I can do more than I thought I could
Work brings more luck than knocking on wood
There's random bad and random good
Work brings more good luck

Excelsior!

Yep! He was a guest in the studio today at Minnesota Public Radio and played the song live. I hadn't heard it before. He's in town this weekend to do a gig with Claudia Schmidt. Alas, I will miss it, because I'm going to Chicago to hear the Howard Shore concert. But I've heard Gorka in concert before; he was great.

Oh man, I hope you keep writing!

I've totally fallen in love with The Wild Swans. I've been recommending it to everyone I know. I loved the inter-relationship of the characters and the way that the two stories overlapped in a weird, but wonderful way.

Makes me wish I was still teaching at the old place where I could have put it on a syllabus. Amazing stuff, Peg. Just totally amazing.
