I answered these questions on [livejournal.com profile] cruisedirector's LJ, so I sorta feel obligated to ask them in my own; turnabout is fair play. (I usually do a variation on this when my friends list pops up another hundred or so. So I'm early this time. Humor me.)

1. When did you first "friend" me? [Actually, you can find out the exact date by clicking here]
2. Why did you first "friend" me?
3. What posts of mine do you like to read the best?
4. What would you like me to write about that I don't?
5. Do you think we would be friends in real life?
6. How often do you read my journal?
7. What do we have in common?
8. Will you post this in your journal so I can answer?
9. Is there anything you want to ask me that you think you should know about me to avoid the impersonality of the internet that I have not already covered in some TMI post or other?
Feel free to answer as many or as few as you like.

(Of course, you may also feel free to answer none at all.)

1. When did you first "friend" me?

December 28, 2003. Almost a year ago!

2. Why did you first "friend" me?

Because I adore EMERALD HOUSE RISING, and I was delighted to find you had a LJ.

3. What posts of mine do you like to read the best?

Oh, the glare reports, probably. Most anything about writing.

4. What would you like me to write about that I don't?

Um. Huh. I never thought about expectations of what other people would write. I'm just voyeuristic, so whatever I get is cool. :)

5. Do you think we would be friends in real life?

I think so!

6. How often do you read my journal?

As often as you update.

7. What do we have in common?

We're both authors who live in northern climes, although my climes are somewhat more northern than yours...

8. Will you post this in your journal so I can answer?

Sure, but you'll have to go to http://mizkit.com, 'cause I don't usually use the LJ for actual posts.

9. Is there anything you want to ask me that you think you should know about me to avoid the impersonality of the internet that I have not already covered in some TMI post or other?

Not off the top of my head, but if I think of something later, I'll ask. :)

7. What do we have in common? books, christianity, creativity, fairy tales, fanfiction, fantasy, folk music, harry ptter, history, hobbits, lord of the rings, loreena mckennitt, lotr, movies, reading, shakespeare, tolkien, and writing! Some of the best things to have in common in my opinion! :-D

1. Despite what the link says, I know I "friended" you in the fall or early winter of 2002.

2. I was impressed by a thoughtful post you uploaded somewhere, and we 'played' together a few places.

3. How can I choose? Cruel question! There aren't any I dislike reading. (I rarely have time to comment on everyone's journal but I like reading everything everyone posts because even if I don't have time to stop and chat, I still know how they are and what's going on.)

4. Nothing comes to mind actually.

5. I'm not sure. We could be, I believe we would argue from time to time, or at least debate but not often.

6. As often as it shows up on my friends list.

7. We share an interest in writing (though I'm not a writer of any caliber), in Harry Potter, in equal rights, in inventive cooking. We have similar tastes in some music. We seem to share an interest in using classical myths to reach the minds and hearts of people today.

8. Honestly, I'm not likely to, no.

9. I would never ask for information that was not in some way volunteered as that borders on rude, at least in my personal opinion.

Well I'm probably not one of the people you expected to answer - it is an interesting new meme so I hope you don't mind.

One more thing before I go to bed for the night:

1. I added you to my friends list in August of this year.

2. I found your LJ through [livejournal.com profile] kalquessa. I think I added you to my friends list while I was reading The Wild Swans -- which I still have to give back to [livejournal.com profile] kalquessa!

3. The posts that spring most readily to mind are actually the ones about your girls, although I 'friended' you because you're a successful writer and have this idea that if I can surround myself with successful writers and editors maybe some of your mojo will rub off on me, I keep finding myself wanting to connect on a more personal level.

5. I'm painfully shy. If I bumped into you at a Con, and recognized you, I'd likely stutter and struggle to say something semi-intelligent and fail in utter agony. That's what I like about LJ, I can make connections with Scary New People from the comfort of my own home, and I can pretend like I'm not shy. :)

6. You're on my Default View, but I have to admit I even skim that some times. I keep telling myself that I'm going to prune my friends list so that I can actually read and respond to every post of every person on my list, but it keeps growing instead and I keep skimming.

7. We're both interested in contemporary fantasy, folklore and literary fantasy. And we're both interested in karate.

8. Maybe later.

I wasn't on LJ at the time, so I've only just seen the post myself -- thank you for linking to it!

I found, myself, that the early years of receiving compliments on my writing were sort of hard because I never knew what to say back. I mean, beyond Thank You, or I'm glad you enjoyed it, but they seemed so very formal to me, and I'm not terribly formal otherwise. And yes, it's probably the only time I run out of words <wry g>.

I guess I read yr journal every couple days when I'm on. I like reading about yr joys and frusterations of writing yr book. I love stories and their telling and I presume that would be the same for you. And even though I am not a writer I am definetly interested in the creative process.

5. I think we are, kinda; at least I don't feel awkward talking to you in RL.
6. Pretty much every day.

3. The glare reports, or anything about what you do when you're writing, or researching or just doing Stuff For the Book. But also the stuff about your real life -- it's all good.

5. I'd like to think so, except I'm so shy around new people that if I ever met you I'd probably be so tongue-tied that I'd end up saying something incredibly stupid.

1. The form says September 29, 2004, but i'm not certain that's the exact date.

2. I kept seeing links to your posts in other journals. and I devoured The Wild Swans in an afternoon, and want to keep up with what you're writing now.

3. They're all pretty good posts, really. I like the writing and progress ones and the ones about family and suchlike. I think they're balanced. I do, however, still feel an (entirely personal and neurotic) feeling that I should read and keep quiet, for the most part.

4. Hmm. I can't think of anything, really.

5. Honestly, I've no idea. I'm a difficult person to deal with. Some people do, some people don't - and the rhyme is out there somewhere with the reason.

6. Every time a post of yours pops up on my friends list. (I don't have a list that is unweildy long - in fact, if I'm really suffering from time I'll hit a friends of list for one of my other friends and check that out.)

7. Well, we both write (though you're better at it than I am. Lately you've been worried about being to slow - I can only laugh and say, you're doing far, far better than I am, so don't sweat it.) If I lived in the right place, we would have both voted liberal (though I think i'm further on the left than you are. I'm not sure. you vote NDP in Canada and you're pretty much a socialist through and through.)

8. I won't. Any time I post anything that requires feedback from my readers, they vanish, so I don't distress them with such things. (rant on and on about my stupid hair, though, and my people are there for me.)

9. Um. I'm pretty comfortable with the oddnesses of what one knows and doesn't know about someone they only know from pixels, so I hardly ever ask anything.

1. When did you first "friend" me?
11 March 2004, but I'd been reading you since around June or July of the previous year. I just hadn't really gotten much into a friendlist yet.

2. Why did you first "friend" me?
Because I'd been reading you and noticed the utility of the friendslist, but that begs the question a bit. I read Wild Swans and loved it, and then when I came over here you were talking about ice palace book stuff and Sebastian Joe's. And I was very homesick and looking to move home to Minneapolis, so that stuff really clicked.

3. What posts of mine do you like to read the best?
Glare reports are good, stuff about the girls is good. Whatever, really.

4. What would you like me to write about that I don't?
I don't think this ought to be a command performance.

5. Do you think we would be friends in real life?
This is an odd question to me, because I'm not sure what level of friendship is meant. I certainly did not feel unfriendly to you when I have seen you in person, and if I see you at a con or a party in the future (in the near future, possibly), I would feign extroversion for long enough to say hi and maybe chat a minute. I think "if circumstances allowed it, yes" has a sufficiently broad caveat.

6. How often do you read my journal?
When you post in it and it shows up on my friends page.

7. What do we have in common?
Books. A city. Some friends/acquaintances. A certain headlong overscheduled persistence, from the sounds of it.

8. Will you post this in your journal so I can answer?
Probably not, but I might. You can answer it here if you have something to say. I'm a little wary of questions 4 and 9, not from you but from a very few other people on my friendslist.

9. Is there anything you want to ask me that you think you should know about me to avoid the impersonality of the internet that I have not already covered in some TMI post or other?
I don't think you owe me any information at all, personal or impersonal. If you haven't chosen to share it, I don't think I "should" know it. It sounds like I'm not the only one.

1. When did you first "friend" me?

I can't remember for sure, but it was at least a year ago, maybe even two... *checks* A year and a half! (April 28, 2003)

2. Why did you first "friend" me?

Someone on my Friends list mentioned your journal, and I was interested reading about the writing life from the POV of someone who's been in the industry for a while. And I enjoyed the posts I saw.

3. What posts of mine do you like to read the best?

Despite my reasons for Friend-ing you, I find I most look forward to reading your family posts. The four of you have a great dynamic and I love reading the stories about the girls. I also like your political posts (you express yourself very passionately but also with consideration and clarity) and of course the posts about 'the writing life'.

4. What would you like me to write about that I don't?

Well, I'd be interested in hearing more about your experiences with your first two books--writing them, getting them published, etc.--but that's mostly because I wasn't around to hear about that when it was happening. No complaints about current content! :)

5. Do you think we would be friends in real life?

Hard to say. I have trouble getting a read on people I've only 'met' online. But we certainly have many similar interests and opinions, so there's a good chance of it.

6. How often do you read my journal?

I check my Friends list at least once a day, and if you've got a new post, I read it then.

7. What do we have in common?

We write. We take our writing seriously. We enjoy fantasy and ideas of a speculative nature. We find mythology fascinating. We like Jane Austen. We dislike Bush. We think family and freedom are important.

8. Will you post this in your journal so I can answer?

Sure, why not.

4. You write pretty much about a range of things, and I can't think of anything you leave out.
5. Although I enjoy your LiveJournal, I don't think we'd be friends in real life, for a variety of reasons.
6. I read it on my friends' list everyday.
7. A love of reading, a passion for the injustice wrought against AIDS victims, kids, trying new things, etc.
8. Sure, but I doubt you read my journal (although you have before), and my friends' list has been spectacularly crap responding to stuff like this lately.
9. not really.

1. When did you first "friend" me?
Sometime on or before 28 Dec. 2003
2. Why did you first "friend" me?
I believe you had tracked me down first, or perhaps it was that the person through whom I met you had told me you had a journal here -- I don't recall, but as soon as I saw your name I immediately recalled a couple of your book titles and was excited at the idea of reading your journal.
3. What posts of mine do you like to read the best?
Probably things about your kids and LOTR and HP commentary, which are probably the biggest things we have in common at the moment.
4. What would you like me to write about that I don't?
I am always interested when other people write about politics and religion regularly but I know that can make journaling tense and not-fun, so I could not say I would LIKE you to write about those things per se, would just be interested in hearing your take more often.
5. Do you think we would be friends in real life?
I hope so! If you are ever in the DC area I would be delighted to take you out for cheesecake and we could find out.
6. How often do you read my journal?
Whenever you post, unless I'm out of town or swamped. You're on my default list. *g*
7. What do we have in common?
Kids, a passion for certain fantasy tropes, writing, some social views.
8. Will you post this in your journal so I can answer?
Heh. Did.
9. Is there anything you want to ask me that you think you should know about me to avoid the impersonality of the internet that I have not already covered in some TMI post or other?

1. When did you first "friend" me?

before you started using the tracking tool! my guess would be around april of 2002.

2. Why did you first "friend" me?

another journal linked to a post of your where you wrote about a day that you had had at the place where you worked. i really liked your writing and it made me laugh so i friended you. oddly, i had never heard of you--i found out about your books afterwards.

3. What posts of mine do you like to read the best?

the posts where you talk about your family and what they mean to you or where you are passionate about something--politics or a piece of art or whatever.

4. What would you like me to write about that I don't?

i don't know.

5. Do you think we would be friends in real life?

we have met in real life. i think that yes, we could go to dinner and have a very pleasant evening talking and getting to know one and other. so certainly the potential is there.

6. How often do you read my journal?

whenever i read lj but i have a tendency to fall behind and play catch-up. like today i started 240 posts behind--eep!

7. What do we have in common?

we love books. we are passionate in our political beliefs. we think that friends and family *matter*.

8. Will you post this in your journal so I can answer?

i don't tend to do that lately but you could answer here.

9. Is there anything you want to ask me that you think you should know about me to avoid the impersonality of the internet that I have not already covered in some TMI post or other?

not off the top of my head but i tend to let people decide what they want me to know and let them tell me until i get to know them better than i know you.

Apparently, Aug 5, 2003

2. Why did you first "friend" me?
Because I absolutely loved reading your posts about the novel

3. What posts of mine do you like to read the best?
The novely bits. I read The Wild Swans and it's so smooth and polished and lovely that it's hard to believe you could have writer woes. And then I read about the process of this ice palace book and it's so fascinating, it's not like you just sit down and the words magically appear. And I love reading about that.

1. I first friended you in April 2003.
2. I friended you because I was interested in your writing about your kids. (I did not know you were a published author and had not read any of your books.)
3. I like to read your research for the ice book, the stuff about your kids, and the posts where I can almost see you growing (like about deciding to take karate and figuring out how to pay for it).
4. I don't know you well enough to know what you might write about that I'd like, that you don't already write about.
5. I object to your phrasing. Usenet, LJ, the Web--these things *are* part of my real life, and so to me we are friendly acquaintances in real life. The distinction you are looking for is called "meatspace" in my head, and "face to face" when I am addressing people whose sensibilites are offended at being referred to as meat.
6. I read your journal every day...that you have a post. Sometimes several times a day. (In general I look at my flist at least twice a day, morning and evening.)
7. We seem to have quite a few things in common, based on interests listed as well as your posts; I suggest we are both interested in justice, personal growth, balancing personal and parenting goals/life, chocolate, sf&f, and probably many other things.
8. I am unlikely to post this in my journal; I recently had quite a few people (some of whom I've known for nearly 10 years) unfriend me due to political stuff, and I'm a bit sensitive on the issue right now.
9. I am content with how you choose to reveal yourself to me, and I prefer to leave to you the privilege of controlling what and how to reveal.

I haven't answered anyone's until now, as I find this meme very difficult, but I'll give it a go, starting with:

1. When did you first "friend" me? [Actually, you can find out the exact date by clicking here]
All I can tell you is that it was apparently BEFORE Nov 27, 2002, as that's as far back as the chart goes, and my name isn't on it.

2. Why did you first "friend" me?
I recall you were brought up in discussion at FA, with everyone raving about you and your work, and I thought it would be interesting to see a published-author's journal, and see what the person behind the book was like. I *think* I Friended you before I read your books, but I'm not sure.

3. What posts of mine do you like to read the best?
Hard to say. I enjoy hearing about your daily life, ups and downs, especially about your children, since I might be facing similar issues in a few years. And I'm fascinated by the book-development process.

5. Do you think we would be friends in real life?
I think this might be the hardest question to answer - so much of our lives are oddly filtered online, and it's easy to see those things we have in common with each other, while not having to really put up with any differences. I would *like* to think we'd be friends in RL, I also recognise differences in tastes, ages, careers, etc. Not that it's prohibitive (my best friend is 13 years my senior, for instance), but ... right, well, I've rambled enough here. It would be fun to find out, if the opportunity ever presented itself. :) Just, er, don't feed me avocado ice cream. *g*

6. How often do you read my journal? I don't use filters when I read, so ... whenever you post.

7. What do we have in common?
Interest in books, including fantasy literature (although you're more voracious than I am), socially liberal, Harry Potter, doing our best in raising family despite flubs, occasionally wanting to throttle spouse while recognising that he's still a good man, and being hard on ourselves.

8. Will you post this in your journal so I can answer?
Probably not, but you're welcome to answer here if you ever feel so inclined.

9. Is there anything you want to ask me that you think you should know about me to avoid the impersonality of the internet that I have not already covered in some TMI post or other?
First of all - REALLY hard to do TMI with me, unless it involves food poisoning. ;) Otherwise ... hmmm... well, as others have said, what you divulge is pretty much up to you, and you're already quite open. There really isn't anything I feel I 'should' know, but if you're looking for something to share, how about - How did you discover Harry Potter?

9. I discovered Harry Potter because my mother-in-law sent us the first book as either a Christmas present or birthday present for Fiona.

The rest is history.

1. When did you first "friend" me?

Oct. 21, 2004. Not too long after I started my own LiveJournal.

2. Why did you first "friend" me?

Because I'm a fan of your writing and because I found your journal to be very interesting.

3. What posts of mine do you like to read the best?

I enjoy reading about your writing process, about how you work through the realities of writing a book. I enjoy reading about your daughters and about your family life...actually I don't think that there's been anything I *haven't* enjoyed reading, so far. :-)

4. What would you like me to write about that I don't?

I wouldn't even begin to presume to tell you--or anyone, really--what to write about. It's your journal and you ought to write about whatever moves you. :-)

5. Do you think we would be friends in real life?

I'd like to think so. I think we could be on the same wavelength in a lot of ways, but we really wouldn't know till we met in person, of course.

6. How often do you read my journal?

Whenever you have a new post.

7. What do we have in common?

Love of books is a biggie.

8. Will you post this in your journal so I can answer?

Sure.

9. Is there anything you want to ask me that you think you should know about me to avoid the impersonality of the internet that I have not already covered in some TMI post or other?

Nope!

2. I was perusing [livejournal.com profile] leiabelle's flist and your journal seemed interesting. When I told her, she reminded me that she had loaned me Wild Swans and that I had found it quite enjoyable.

5. Unfortunately, I do not think we would be friends. Friendly acquaintances has possibilities though.

6. I usually read through my flist entries once or twice a day, so usually whenever you post an entry.

7. Literature (especially YA lit)

8. Yes, I suppose.
