Shopping

I used to do a lot of shopping on the day after Thanksgiving. But my day care no longer stays open on that day, so now I have the girls with me all Thanksgiving weekend (Rob has to work Friday, Saturday and Sunday), which certainly puts a crimp in my bargain-hunting style, particularly when I have to buy presents for them.

This year I decided they were old enough to bring along. I set the alarm for 6:00 a.m. and got them up, grumbling. I headed for Kohl's--never have I seen the parking lot so crowded. We waited in line for an hour to buy several items, including this. (larger view here). I was excited to get new dishes at such a discount--the ones we've been using I got when I graduated from college. While we were waiting in line, Delia innocently picked up a candle on the end cap to smell it--and then dropped it and broke it, and was so devastated that she burst into tears and wanted to go home immediately. I had to take her to Starbucks and buy her hot chocolate to sooth her shattered nerves. We eventually hit several other stores and were home by 3:00 (the girls, poor things, fell asleep in the car). We eagerly opened up the new box of china, only to discover that the mugs on top were broken. They hadn't fallen over in the car or anything. They must have been broken when we bought them. I called the store immediately, and they were willing to exchange them--except that of course, all the sets of china were sold out.

They told me that more will be coming in eventually. But I still find myself unreasonably irritated.

It's a lovely choice of china, though. There's so much ugly stuff out there, but your new stuff is nice. Except for the breakages, of course.
