I called Kohl's and asked whether the replacement china had come in. "Yes," they said, "bring your broken dishes in and we'll swap 'em out." So I drove to store one, only to have them say, "Oh, we were wrong, we don't have THAT pattern, we have ANOTHER 53-piece pattern from Oneida that's on sale this weekend. But Store 2 has the correct pattern in stock."

So I cursed a lot (I had troubled to call first, after all), drove to Store 2, and exchanged three broken cups, two broken plates, and a broken fruit bowl and brought them home. Started washing all the new dishes to put them in the cupboards. Discovered that the sugar bowl had a hairline crack. Checked other pieces and found nothing further. Drove back to Store 2, got sugar bowl replaced.

Came home, and obsessively doublechecked all pieces again. Discovered yet another cup with a hairline crack, cursed a lot, got into the car, and drove the 22 mile round trip to Store 2 yet again to replace it.

I'm sure the saleslady at Store 2 is wondering whether she has really seen the last of me.

I'm sorry. I dream of the day I can *actually* buy things and not have something be wrong with them.
