To those of you who endured Fiona's attempt to play "Away in a Manger" on her violin at yesterday's children's Sunday School program, I am so very very sorry. We are glad, however, that she did after all play some notes right, although we must admit of course that there were many notes played wrong.

Aren't you glad the organ drowned her out by the third verse?

Try not to think of it as "wrong notes," try to think of it as "avant-garde."

That's what I used to tell people when I used to perform premieres of new compositions. I think it mostly worked.

I don't think you get an 'A' in childhood until you play something completely really less-than-well in front of a lot of people. To her credit, she didn't freeze up and not play at all, right?

Nope, she bravely stuck it out until the end!

Oh dear. I hope it wasn't too awful for her; and in particular won't make it too much harder *next time* she wants to play in public.

I was talked out of taking violin lessons in school because it was felt that the very long road to even partial success would not suit my personality. Fiona's probably right where she should be.

Parents of stringed-instrument players win many, many extra stars for their crowns in Heaven.

(Signed, mother of a trumpet player. He's loud, but intonation isn't nearly as difficult.)

Er. And I wondered (at the time) why my parents were so glad when my interest in violin waned and I went over to piano. (Although I still contend that my interest might've stuck if they'd let me play cello.)

Oh dear, the poor girl. =) Still, good on her for toughing it out! And won't it be all the sweeter when she does someday get lovely music out of that thing?

(I played the piano. you really can't make that sound too bad at all.)

She really is an amazing kid for standing up straight in front of all those people and playing all the verses.

On behalf of children everywhere performing in public when not yet perfect, ouch.

Last night I played a four-hand piece with Georgia at her piano recital. I can tell you that it is quite a feat to play any musical instrument while simultaneously having a heart attack. Bravo Fiona! Encore!
