I had not listened to the news last night or glanced at the paper this morning. I read about three entries on my friends page and went downstairs and pulled the paper in from the front porch.

Merciful heavens.

Unfortunately so far, I've seen little to be merciful about (although I have heard reports that Arthur C. Clarke lives on the leeward side of the island, so is probably ok -- but it feels odd to be pleased over one survivor, no matter how much a big name, given all the deaths).

And it keeps getting worse. The reports were 4,000 yesterday evening, 12,000 this morning in the UK, 15,000 by the time I got up, and was over 22,000 last I heard. As folk pointed out, it's FAR more deaths than from 9/11, yet it's receiving proportionally little attention in the US, being the centrists that we are. *grumble*

"Merciful heavens" is sadly appropriate.

Same experience, though I saw it in the newspaper we'd left rolled in the plastic until late in the morning -- just pure shock. Then I turned on the TV.
