I am just beyond frustrated. Rob thought he had my hard drive rebuilt on my main computer. I haven't been able to write or download e-mail or do anything on it for two weeks. I haven't been able to get my holiday letter out. And this morning the machine wouldn't even boot. Best guess is it is a virus or a worm. He's going to have to find it and then start all over.

If they managed to track down the unspeakable jerk who wrote this worm and released it onto the Internet and locked him into a room and let me have a few minutes alone with him, I don't think I would be answerable for what I would do to him.

Maybe virus, may be worm, but also may be "malware" -- malicious spyware. If you'd like some more advanced thoughts on this, you might ask [livejournal.com profile] perigee, who, as my House Geek and a professional geek as well, has spent a not insubstantial amount of time helping people identify and remove spyware and the like.

It is my perception that malware gets in under the radar of many virus scanners, and so even people who are doing everything right in terms of virus scanning software are getting hit by malware. Horrid. Fortunately also fixable.

I have a program to run to check for spyware. I'll suggest it to Rob. Thanks.
