I hate that book, and have had many impassioned argumnets about it over the years. Whether you see the tree as a lover, a mother, or a tree, the message is that the boy is justified in not giving a crap about it, in destroying it for his own purposes, and that the tree actually likes it.

I'm organizing the library at my UU church, and was delighted when Eva, the director of religious education, agreed with my assessment that that book absolutely did not belong in our library.
