Ouch

I very cleverly managed to clobber my foot by catching my toe on the couch in passing, and I'm walking with a limp. I went to the doctor's today and got an X-ray. There isn't a fracture, but the doctor thought there might be a small bone chip displaced; she's going to have a radiologist review the film. So I wear dorky athletic shoes and do no on-the-feet sorts of exercise for a week (although I suspect I'll do some upper body weight-lifting and/or abs). I've dug my cane out of the basement that I used when I was pregnant with Delia and plan to use it for the next couple of days, just until the swelling goes down.

Bottom line: not really serious, just annoying.

Ouch! My toes are cringing in sympathy.

I hope the radiologist doesn't find anything that the first review missed.

At least they didn't give you the Surgery Shoe. My J broke his toe (kicked the new bedframe) and had to wear the open-toed dork shoe for six weeks, including the first two snowfalls of the year.

I had surgery to shorten toes on each foot about thirteen years ago, and yeah, I got those shoes and had to wear them for six weeks. With pins sticking out of toes on each side. I developed a great deal of respect for how much you use your toes when walking, and especially, turning corners.

I've never heard of that. Why did you need your toes shortened? (If you don't mind my nosiness. If you do, ignore me.)

The fourth toe on each foot was proportionately too long, and since they got cramped in shoes, they started developing extremely painful bone spurs on their tops: the skin over the bone spurs would ulcerate and peel away, very painful. I put up with it for two years, and finally had the surgery done. It wasn't a case of my deliberately wearing shoes that were too small or to tall for me (I've never really gone for high heels or anything, although I did wear slightly taller heels than I do now). I just couldn't find any shoes at all that would give my fourth toes enough room.

To do the surgery, they broke each toe, removed part of the bone, and jammed a pin in through the remaining bones that stuck out the end of the toe for several weeks until they (the pins) were later removed. Think toe shishkabobs. (I know. Ewww.) The recovery from the surgery was tedious and painful, but I was glad I did it. Once they healed, I've had no problem with my feet since.

Well, until yesterday, that is.

Ouch, indeed. I did something similar to my left big toe whilst tripping up the stairs, and it just never seemed to get better. I finally had it x-rayed two months later and it wasn't broken, so I have no idea what the deal was. It finally stopped hurting, eventually ...

First Rachel, now you--bad winter for toes! (Maybe I shouldn't go barefoot all the time . . .) I hope it heals fast.
