I really didn't think I'd be at risk reading my friends page tonight. I trust that the jerk who has posted a purported p. 606 on several LJ communities (which appeared on my friends page without an LJ cut; obviously in an attempt to spoil as many people as possible) was using Photoshop.

Ass.

I read fast. I promise you that after I have my copy, when I post, I will post with LJ-cuts. I trust you will do the same. If you don't, you will be cut from my friends list for good. I have no room in my life for malicious asses who find it amusing to ruin other people's fun.

(Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] misia for the icon.)

Edited to add: [livejournal.com profile] cheshyre passed along a good tip:
Someone else on my flist posted that you can filter out all communities from your flist (and only view users) by adding "/?show=p" at the end of your friendslist url (It looks like this: " www.livejournal.com/username/friends/?show=p " )

Wow. That's just plain maliciously mean.

Hee. I'm tempted to write an encoded message with my guess of how the plot will turn out and then post the decryption technique Saturday morning so that people can see how accurate I was (which is probably not bound to be very, alas).

I imagine that's the guy who has caused such an uproar...he admitted it was fake on another community.

I don't read either community but the whole thing was mentioned in a post on my flist about an hour ago. I was just about to give you a link to his post but I noticed he's locked it. But he spoke about the guy giving supposed spoilers.

I just saw it on [livejournal.com profile] found_objects. I do hope it's fake.

Thanks. I just went and looked at it. Nice job, if it is a fake.

Fortunately I appear to be spared.

Alternatively, of course, you could drop him from your reading list for a while, and perhaps inform him why.

But the other solution also would work, I imagine.

I've heard there are a lot of people writing their own versions of book 6, and pretending to have advance copies. (That they might share all or part of, in various venues.) Most of this garbage is given away, not sold. I don't understand the fakers' motivation. It seems like a very ugly kind of fraud.

For at least this book and the prior one, people put up other people's fanfics on file-sharing sites with misleading titles. I think some people just like to feel like they're putting one over on someone.

OTOH, I know of at least two people who wrote and bound their own gen fanfics for their kids, as presents, to tide them over until Saturday, which I thought was impressive (even as I wanted to rec them some good fics => ).

I just saw it too -- posted by a friend of mine even. Extremely cruel if it's real. And I WILL be defriending him if that's the case.

I hope, hope, hope it's just a joke. I REALLY didn't want to read any spoilers!

(i.e. on his personal journal, not a community. He said he wanted to anger some people and therefore didn't put it behind a cut, but gave 'ample warning' as "Don't read this unless you want to hate me"... and then underlined the offending sentence in red. I feel like crying :( I had HP5 spoiled for me as well, but thought I was 'safe' this time because I'm going on vacation tomorrow. Obivously not :( )

I just don't get it. Why would people go out of their way to spoil other people's pleasure maliciously? You're right, it's cruel.

Who was it, by the way? I wonder how people reacted.

He replied to my post. I'll let you guess. Most of the people on his friends list didn't care.

And why wait, by the way? If this jerk was on my friends list, I'd cut him immediately. I get the impression that this is a fake, but the tone of his entries indicate that if he had the real book, he'd use it to spoil everyone he can.

Sanctimonious assholes like that ("you shouldn't care about a book so much, so I'm going to spoil it for you") in your life you do not need. Anyone who tries to spoil me (whether with fakes or real passages), is getting cut witout pity.

As far as I know, the guy from my friendlist is NOT the same as the one who went around and posted in on communities. Had it been the same, I would have removed him immediately.

I usually really enjoy his entries, so I'm hesitant to cut him. Especially as he seemed really contrite when I went off at him for spoiling it for me. He did give some warning, ("Don't read this if you don't want to know what happens in book 6" in huge letters) - unfortunately the underlining drew my eye anyway, so I couldn't miss it.

It's not really an excuse, because it really should have been hidden behind a cut, but it's enough to leave me undecided whether or not to cut him. I'll wait and see how much it spoils the book for me - it may have no influence at all, it may ruin completely what's supposed to be a poignant scene (which is what happened with Sirius). We'll see...

Definitely the latter. People have been posting spoilers about HP6 all around LJ, NOT hidden behind LJ-cuts. An extremely cruel thing to do IMHO.

Ok, so what I would like to know (as I finally just stopped reading EVERYTHING on LJ to stay spoiler free until finishing the book), WHO were these malicious asses (funny how people are polite enough not to identify them in any of the posts I've read) and were all of them hoaxes? I've gone back now to see what all the fuss is about and all I've found is an ass that has an obnoxious icon that spoils without reading further ([livejournal.com profile] jeremyjx, DON'T click unless you want to be enraged by the icon) who posted one line revealing the major plot spoiler, but I didn't see any kind of scanned-in page, photoshopped or not. Was he the only one or was there others?

Why would anyone try so hard, so blantantly, to be so deliberately cruel? They have an ugly soul, truly. As for the incredible number of people that seem to support this (get over it, it's just fiction, get a life, etc., etc.) what don't they understand about looking forward to something, anticipation, finding joy in something, no matter how large or small or how many people think likewise? The fact that someone cares about something, and someone else has deliberately crushed their joy for their own entertainment is wrong, no matter what the situation.

Sorry, long post, should have just put this in my own journal...

I don't mind in the least; I am currently writing a long post about my own reactions to the book which will expound upon this at greater length.

I read the spoiler in [livejournal.com profile] found_objects, where [livejournal.com profile] jeremyjx posted an image from the book. There are about seven hundred comments on the entry, although the image has disappeared; I don't know why. Perhaps whoever owned the server took it down. He certainly should get into legal trouble for posting it, and I jolly well hope somebody sues his ass. I thought I was safe since the book wasn't out yet, and I wasn't reading any HP forums. I underestimated the degree to which people would go out of their way to ruin things for people who had never done anything to hurt them.

When the next book comes out, I will probably stop reading anything on my friends list (and perhaps the Internet at all) from the date that the book gets shipped. I will be damned if I will be spoiled on that book! I would guess he got the picture from an unscrupulous bookstore employee who broke the signed waiver that all bookstore employees were supposed to sign.

What hurts just as much as being spoiled--perhaps even more--is the gloating contempt of the people who did it to those of us who said that we were hurt and angry at their actions. What kind of lives do they have, what kind of ethics do they have, what kind of heart do they have, that they want to hurt and crush as many people as possible, to kick us even harder for saying, this hurt me? And why do we deserve such venomous contempt for being hurt by needless cruelty?
