I just called the girls, who are home today, and I was rather amused that my little sophists took my dispensation to watch "one movie, one that you can both agree on" and used it to watch, indeed, one movie: Pride and Prejudice--all six hours of it.

"I'm looking forward to seeing the new version, aren't you?" I asked Delia (we've seen the trailer in the movie theaters).

"Yeah," she said, with a shade of doubt in her voice. "But . . . I think the Mr. Darcy in the new version [Matthew MacFadyen] can't be nearly as good as our Mr. Darcy [Colin Firth]."

Have you seen the Bollywood 'Bride and Prejudice'? I haven't seen it yet, but I hear it's very good.

Haven't seen it yet, either, but it's on my list. It didn't get very good reviews.

Forget the reviews! It was good! Bump it higher on your list!

See it soon, as [livejournal.com profile] archmage45 says! It's ducky. Definitely adapted by a fan. And yet it's not a slavish adaptation (so often a death knell), but an independent (and delightful) story. A retelling in the best sense of the word.

Despite my love for MacFadyen in MI-5, I must agree with Delia as well. I've heard he refused to read the book, and the pictures I've seen for the movie look dreadful.

Out of curiosity, where'd you hear that? I'm not even a fan of him from MI-5, rather, from his stage work. It just seems out of character for someone who regularly plays Shakespeare's princes to snub Austen.

Ummm, it was a site I ran across though googling the pic a while back. You've seen him on stage? How did he there?

He doesn't look as wrong to me as the young woman looks for Elizabeth.

And how can they do that story justice in two hours?

I think I might stay with my six hour version, despite Judy Dench as Lady Catherine.

I share these concerns. but shall see it anyways and most likely enjoy it, being a romantic drama/comedy sap.

Oh. me too--and how!--except when it comes to Austen I've gotten picky because I've read the novels so very many times a voice whispers the words to me when I watch a depiction on screen, and if it wrenches her text too wildly, I get thrown right out of the story.

The young woman with all that makeup and her mouth constantly hanging open I guess to show off botoxed lips is just so UNlike Eliza Bennet I don't know if I can shed my inward images and surrender to this one, the way I could with the six hour version (and yes, I can name every single variation from the text, but for the most part they work).

urk, i know. I'll just have to repeat this to myself: book adaptations are not trying to be the book on screen, they are a completely different animal with good forbears. *sigh*

All those people's heads are uncovered! And they aren't wearing gloves!

Laughs at the ingenuity of your daughters! A single movie indeed!

I also agree with their taste, as there's no Mr. Darcy other than Colin Firth.

Loved the picture you posted of the girls yesterday too --- they are growing up so fast. How does one make a user pic from a photo anyway?

What sort of system do you have? You may have a photo/.jpg manipulation software package on your system already. I can't answer that question unless I know what package you are working with; anyway, the basic idea is that icons can be up to 100 x 100 pixels. I get a photo, open it as a .jpg, do a "cut" of the portion of the photo I want, save it to a new file, and reduce it to 100 x 100 pixels. Then I load it as a new user icon.

Next time you doubt your skill at motherhood, look back at this post and realize you shaped two wonderful tweens who choose (jointly!) to spend 6 hours watching Austin, and can fondly have favorite versions of characters.

Wow, when they're old enough they should get a kick out of "Bridget Jones's Diary" (both book and movie).

I watched the trailer, and sadly must concur with Delia's insightful comment.

And you own the A&E version? I'm afraid I can't get Bill to spend even a minute with Austen, much less find room for six hours of it in the video library.
