Having been in a similar situation (not that I ever strung them along in quite that manner), it's the fact that when you say that you are unemployed and do not have the money at that present time and you don't know when you will be employed, or have the money, yet they keep you in a circular conversation and persist to call day after day after day, no matter how many times you explain your situation. Not all are like that, but many are.
I wasn't writing a book or anything, but sent out resumes and made an effort (and worked low-end, part-time, temporary positions just to make rent and food on the table) for a solid 7 months, and it was scary and stressful, and the constant phone calls and at times, truly nasty people on the other end sometimes set me over the edge of anger, frustration and deep, deep depression.
It's such an awful situation to be in, so his post to me, was a comic relief of sorts.
