I got my computer back.

The girls and I are all taking our next belt test tomorrow. They are testing for blue, and I am testing for purple. Rob's step-mom is in town and will be able to see the test.

Woohoo!

Congratulations!

And, if this is an instance of the known problem with that model that Tony pointed out, that may increase the chance that the fix will stick this time.

I've been meaning to call you re: your computer problems. I see you are still working on recovery; I am so sorry you have been having such problems.

Is it likely that I might get my web page back anytime soon? Or should I look for a new hosting site?

In fact, I put it back up the other day. I haven't checked closely for damage, though; there may well be missing image files. (I don't have an email address for you that I can find; I've got one other thing pending that too.)

The only file missing is an image file called smkelmscottborder.jpg (the background tile....) I probably have a backup on my desktop, or if you could find it with the name that would be great.

In fact it turned up: /home/restore/orphans/#278692/smkelmscottborder.jpg. No guarantee the file is undamaged, though, check it out after restoring it.

And are you back on email, on my server or elsewhere? I don't have any way to get in touch right now and I'm at the fiddling last cleaning up bits where I have to poke everybody and see what's okay and what isn't.

I hope ya'll just kick butt on the testing and I hope the iMac never fails again too.

What level is "blue"?

A tiny little request - when you mention belt tests could you say what numeric level corresponds to the belt color, so this information has a chance of meaning something to those of us who are familiar with a different flavor of karate dojo? I myself have a low-purple Shotokan belt, which is level 5 (counting backwards from 10). Is that the same as your purple belt?

American Shotokan uses only 3 colors (besides white, brown and black). I believe that in Japan they don't award any new belts until you get to brown. I've been told that the extra colors were added solely for the American audience, which does not respond well to delayed gratification.

I've been told that the extra colors were added solely for the American audience, which does not respond well to delayed gratification. That figures, although I find it sorta insulting.

Anyway, in my dojo, the belt sequence is:

white
gold
greenstripe
green
purplestripe (where I am now until, hopefully, tonight)
purple
bluestripe (where the girls are until, hopefully, tonight)
blue
redstripe
red
brownstripe
brown
one black stripe
two black stripes
black belt, first degree

and the degrees go up from there. So I guess I'm roughly a third of the way through.
