Just came back from seeing it again with Rob and Fiona (Delia, wisely knowing her limitations, elected for an overnight with [livejournal.com profile] kiramartin's family instead). I am too tired to do a proper review. I will just say that I had the CD case cover of the soundtrack CD flipped open on the way home, and was staring at Daniel my-how-he's-grown Radcliffe, until Rob sternly told me to leave the Bad Place and flip it closed.

I will also remark that my favorite part of the credits was the line that read "No dragons were harmed in the making of this movie."

Jen and I saw it just now. Yes, this movie is going to keep fan-ficcers busy for about the next eight years, isn't it?

Spoilers for Omissions

The conversation in the car on the way home consisted of stuff we missed, like Dobby and Winkie, the Sphinx, and no blackmail.

I went to several Bad Places, but none of the boys could talk when they saw Emma in her party frock. My love for our most detested potions professor remains undiminished.

I wish Richard Harris was still with us, Michael Gambon just doesn't do it for me.

Snape did NOT get enough screentime, but the scenes he was in, he totally owned. And obviously he has to be in the next one more.

Guh.

Oh, that's another one I miss. Snape blasting the bushes after the Yule Ball to chase out the couples.

I posted in my long review here:

Someone (was it [livejournal.com profile] aome or [livejournal.com profile] cruisedirector? Don't remember.) mentioned how they were annoyed that Dumbledore seemed so angry at Harry in the trophy room when he asked whether Harry had put his name in the Goblet, whereas he was calm in the book. Didn't bother me one way or another. I liked Michael Gambon; I do prefer him to Richard Harris, mostly because I think Gambon is ten years younger than Richard Harris, and so his Dumbledore seems so much more vigorous, with a wider range of his emotions and an inner core of toughness that I like for Dumbledore, whereas Harris just felt wispy to me. Hope Gambon lives long enough to finish the series; I'd particularly love to see what he does with book 6).

The scene after Harry's name is pulled from the Goblet is probably what solidified my distaste for Gambon, and I know I should be blaming the director, but it seems completely out of character to me.

There was anger there, not concern for the well-being of a student. In the book, Dumbledore's calm in the face of everyone else's anger makes the scene. I just didn't much care for that portrayal.

After a day of thinking about it, I'm still sad that they left out the Rita Skeeter subplot. I wish that the maze had more stuff in it, and I wish that it had been made clear that Amos Diggory was pleased to meet Quidditch!Harry, not the Boy Who Lived. On the other hand, the scene in Snape's classroom was so lovingly done that I will cut more slack. Alan Rickman and Maggie Smith are brilliant in their roles.

I know, I know! I was so happy about that. I can't wait to see him get his chance to shine in the fifth movie! They are going to start filming in February.

The movie is certainly getting good buzz. I don't remember if I saw #2, but I certainly didn't see #3. I suppose I need to get current.

#3 was much better than #2 or #1, in my opinion, and this one is right up there in my opinion, too.

Oh, good; I'm not the only one who thoroughly adored number 3, despite the mild errors.

(Oh, I'm such a stinking purist.)

I've just seen too many people say recently, "Well, at least number 4 wasn't as awful as number 3!"

Awful? I think not.

Oh yes, #3 and #4 are far better movies than the first two. I dozed off during #1.
