I didn't do what I should have been doing tonight, namely cleaning the house, working on the novel, or anything else productive. Instead, played with Corel Paint, trying to create LOTR FUPS (Frequently Used Phrases).

Came up with this style; what do you think? I want to create a green border to match the lettering but am baffled as to how to do it (knock against it with your head, Peregrin Took!) Then I have to figure out how/where to host them. Anyway, have made a whole mess of them in the same style:

Begging your pardon
Put that bow away, Master Elf!
With Sam's permission, we will call that settled
Excellent! You seem to be coming to your senses
Do not speak of such things
Seem fairer and feel fouler
Glory and trumpets!
Do I not hit near the mark?
Do not be hasty
Is nothing safe?
Oh, indeed!
I do not wish to play at riddles. Speak plainer!
Very ridiculous of you, Frodo!
Root and twig, very odd!
Now's a chance to show your quality
Speak friend and enter
You have a stout heart
You are a stout fellow
Both the sweet and the bitter
Very odd indeed!
Not all who wander are lost
The worthies of Bree with be discussing it a hundred years hence!

What a nifty idea. I may have to borrow it, if you don't mind... the thought of icons with quotes from some of the songs embedded in LotR is just too good to pass up. And quotes from the battles. "Death" they cried with one voice... (of all the things to remember).

I wish I could say something useful about using Paint; I've been teaching myself Photoshop since buying into the icon craze, and still am not sure how to do a quick and elegant frame.

I think that those would be nice icons! The one you have now is very simple and stripped-down, but elegant. I have no idea how to use Corel Paint (it's not a program I've worked with), but the Help file should have some useful information, and I hope that some people who reply to this will also be more helpful than I am.

As for hosting, I'd be glad to host them for you at my website (http://www.mark356.net); just email them to me, and I'll put them up! Probably lots of other people would be willing, as well, just from your friends list. If you want to host them yourself, there are dozens of places where you can get a free website; http://brinkster.com , http://xentrik.net , and http://www.freewebz.com will all host you for free and let you upload and post pictures. I hope that wasn't entirely useless, and good luck!

Thanks for offering to host them. That's really nice of you! But I had all but decided I want my own webspace anyway, so I've already gotten the ball rolling to set up webspace for myself at sff.net. I'll put up a link to the LOTR FUPS soon, if all goes well.

Still can't figure out how to put a border on the icons, but oh well. I'll figure it out someday.

Anyhow, thanks again.

Yes! You're perfectly right. I'll fix it tonight. Thanks.
