Peer Advisor at Monroe Community College. I get to help students decide what classes they should take in order to finish their Associate's degrees.
A description of a typical day
I start up all the computers in the Advisement Center, then check students in, provide them with a list of everything they've taken so far and what they have left, then send them to an advisor to build their class schedules. I only work a few hours a day, between classes of my own.
Why you like it and (if you dare)
I get paid well for a job that is fairly easy and allows me to help other students.
Why you dislike it
It can be very rushed sometimes when a lot of people all need help at once.
What sorts of things can go wrong at your job?
If the computers don't work, it's very difficult for us to properly help people. Also, if a lot of advisors are sick, we end up with a long line of people waiting to be helped.
What kind of person thrives in your job
Someone with enough patience to work well with people.
Anything else you can think of that would give her an idea of what it might be like to choose your career?
What I do is a helpful step if someone wants to be a school counselor, advisor or teacher - you learn to work with people and explain things to them clearly, and you come to understand the problems that a lot of people face when they are at college age. It's not something I would recommend as a career in its own right, but it's certainly a good start.
