What country am I living in? A man was arrested in a public mall in upstate New York for wearing a t-shirt that said "Give Peace A Chance" and "No War In Iraq" -- handcuffed and led off to jail and night court. Even better is the fact that the man -- Stephen Downs -- is the director of the Albany Office of the State Commission on Judicial Conduct, which investigates complaints of misconduct by judges...

Even moreso considering that he bought the shirt at that mall.

One of the things that many of the reports are eliding is the fact that it was a custom order shirt, not a pre-printed one.

You are living in a country where members of small communities ban t-shirts seemingly every day. It is the way of the world. People with some small amount of power exercise it unduly, and the community, local, national or global, either rises up to protest the power, or approves of it. The greatest number of voices wins. A student at Greenbrier High School in Georgia was suspended from school for wearing a t-shirt with the Pepsi logo, on a day when Coca-Cola was sponsoring Coke Education Day at his school. That's the kind of country you're living in. It's always a question of whose ox is being gored.

You're living in the kind of country where when that happens it's news and people are horrified. Hold onto that, because it's when it starts becoming something to be cynical and shrug about that things are really bad.

I can't think of one thing to say that isn't irrelevant or touching on body functions or deities. This is... No, I can't.

I can only wish it were another climate, and one could think of it as an isolated mistake.

"Sometimes, sanity actually wins out."

Far too rarely, though.
