That was the home of one of the partners at the firm I work at. Their home was utterly destroyed. There's a video clip of the fire and an interview with the guy: click the link at the top of the story. He and his wife escaped with their lives--and nothing else.

I must talk fire drills with the girls and Rob again. And check smoke alarms.

Wow. I'm curious as to what started the fire. They seem not to know yet; can you please update this when they do.

Two college friends of mine had a house fire a month ago. They suffered a lot of damage, but it was better than this story.

Home fire drills seem like a good idea.

Ok, that freaked me out -- the only Orono I know about is in Maine, and I used to live there. :-)

Bangor, on the other hand -- halfway through our cross-country move, I was able to call my mother-in-law and say, "Hey, we're just getting into Bangor!" And there's yet another Bangor across Puget Sound from me.

Bothell, on the other hand, seems to be unique. :-)

I've been one link away from a couple of other major house fires. It sounds like a really nasty experience.

I'd lose a LOT of old pictures I value, though selected ones (more and more all the time) have been digitized and those are backed up off-site. One of the great benefits of digital. And I'd lose a lot of books, of course. And a fair amount of artwork.

Sure would deal with the accumulated kipple, though.

(I've often suspected the biggest statistical benefit of the alarm system is that it will turn in a fire alarm too, not just breakins.)

I suppose some of the fire extinguishers here are getting kinda old. Hmmmm.

I carry two CDs full of jpgs in my backpack, just in case. One of these days I'll actually get around to mailing them to my parents for extra safety. :-)

*yikes*

fires are nasty, nasty things. Looks like those people are lucky they got out of that one alive, though.

Last night I realized that the lampshade for the bedside lamp had gotten put on crooked, and that the lightbulb had melted through the inside plastic layer and was in the process of scorching the cloth. Left unattended much longer, and it could well have been a fire. On the second floor, too. Rope ladders and fire extinguishers for all....
