I have been wearing sarongs (56 by 48 inches) tied at the wrists and draped over the shoulders a lot lately as jackets, but I'm interested in getting a larger pareo (72 inches in length or so) to try wearing as a dress. (See a free podcast that explains how they can be worn here). Anyone know a place they can be purchased in the Twin Cities?

If you remind us, we can buy you one -- or several -- the next time we're in Tahiti.

Won't help you much this year, though.

Why not just make one by buying a 2-yard length of material? Otherwise, I've found a couple of places online - not always quite 72", but perhaps they would still work for you?

You'll have to look at the lengths carefully, since they vary, but every spring/summer, CostPlus WorldMarket has a bunch of pareos that go on frequent sales. If you ever see me wrapped in dark green or dark purple cloth, that's where it came from. (Non-pastels! The joy and the relief!) It's the one that's just off 494 and France, in by Circuit City.

I have *never* seen a pareo in a pastel color.

I've only seen one or two, but that comment was meant to contrast with spring and summer pastels in other types of clothing, not with pareos bought in other locations.

Oh, of course! I should have thought of them. Thanks!

I have a booklet on how to tie pareos that I bought in Tahiti. I believe I know where it is, and further, I believe it is in English. You're welcome to borrow it.

The podcast linked above did a good job of demonstrating different ways to wear them, so I think I'm set. Thanks!

This has nothing to do with pareos. But could I yoink your wearing-ironmongery pic? I like this much.

Sure, be my guest. You are welcome to take any of my Tolkien icons. See here and here (and the mood set is here, supplementary set here.). Credit is nice.

Thank you! I'll certainly give credit. I'm just going to borrow the one, though. For some reason I like the word "ironmongery," and the idea of a sartorial aspect to ironmongery, doubly so.

"I might have been inclined, myself, to regard a coffin-nail as the deadest piece of ironmongery in the trade. But the wisdom of our ancestors is in the simile; and my unhallowed hands shall not disturb it, or the Country's done for."

As Dickens says.
