I was thinking today about playfulness in clothing.

I work in a law office, as you may remember. Theoretically, the dress code is "business casual," with jeans allowed on Friday. I haven't owned a pair of pantyhose in, what, two years? Three years? When I used to wear them every day. Thank heavens those are out of my life now.

Fridays, now, as designated jeans day, are also what I think of as "pushing the envelope" day. There are clothes and jewelry that I own which are a bit over the line: unusual, often brightly colored, and I wear them as part of my silent protest over my lot in life: see? See? I am not your average boring corporate drone. On Fridays I wear the Hibiscus coat, dearly beloved, fire engine red, over twenty-five years old, and it looks terrific every time I throw it on. On Fridays I wear the denim jacket with antique ribbons, buttons and beaded fringe sewn on.

Today I wore the dragon sarong, draped around me as a wrap around skirt. I have not dared wearing a wrap around skirt before. I did not pin it, as that somehow seemed to be cheating, although I was craven enough to wear bicycle shorts underneath. But I wore it, and when the pleat I had tucked in front loosened up, I sometimes flashed a bit of thigh as I walked down the hall. What the hell. It is flamboyantly colorful: blues, wild yellows and oranges and greens. I got a number of compliments, which was gratifying.

(I may have felt daring wearing a sleek and sinuous dragon coiled around my body, but I will admit that I thought of you, [livejournal.com profile] prncsmoonbeam, reflecting that my sartorial daring was meek and commonplace in comparison to yours. Your outfits would slay 'em.)
