Without much fanfare, the House of Representatives last week voted to give members of Congress yet another pay raise, as it has done almost every year for nearly a decade.

For some reason, our elected officials decided against holding a news conference. Maybe that's because they didn't want to draw attention to the fact that they raise their own salaries almost every year while refusing to raise the pay of our lowest-paid workers.

Disgusting.

Of course not. Then a reporter might ask them what they've done lately to earn their paycheck.

Do you know how badly I wish one of those fat cats would step up and donate their increase in wage to the homeless? Or something?

Blech. The parliament members here in Serbia did something similar a few months ago. There was a great outcry, but it had no effect whatsoever, since politicians can get away with anything here. It was even more despicable than this, considering how much of the population here lives below the poverty line while they stroll around in their designer suits and preach about 'democratic changes'.

It's depressing that now there's another thing they can claim *must* be morally and democratically acceptable since it's happened in the US, that paragon of democracy.
