Rob asked his employer to give him the holiday weekend off, adding as an extra wheedle that it is our 20th anniversary coming up (the 5th). Wonder of wonders, they granted the request! We are leaving tonight to go camping at Rice Lake State Park, near Owatonna. We will come back Monday night, so we can join in the huge block party held every year among our neighbors.

Inspired by the opportunity for a three-day camp, I went out and bought this kitchen box. Am very pleased with it. It created a problem, however, because now we have too much camping stuff to put in our car. I called my sister to ask if we could borrow their car-top carrier, and my brother-in-law said we could just have it; they haven't used it in five years. Problem solved!

edited to add: Aw, nuts. [livejournal.com profile] kiramartin just let me know that the yearly block party was moved from the 3rd to the 1st, so we are going to miss it anyway. And we'll be coming back earlier than we need to for nothing. I would have liked to have had somebody TELL us. Damm.

Enjoy your well-deserved R&R and family time together. Have a great holiday, and anniversary - wow, 20 years! (You were apparently married the same year as my aunt/uncle. :D )

One of the things I most enjoyed about Buck-skinning was cooking over an open fire, and some of the other 'skinners had the best camp kitchen setups. I'll have to get some of my Rendezvous photos scanned to I can post them in my gallery.

Oh, I love Rice Lake State Park! We haven't camped there, but the boat landing next to the little loop of semi-restored prairie is full of dragonflies and birds. The prairie should be pretty good too. There are almost always monarchs and goldfinches, and, in season, which I don't think it is yet, closed gentian.
