Delia has told me that she wants to start cello this year. The school orchestra needs another cello, and Delia knows the conductor because she's the mother of one of Fiona's best friends, and in fact runs the music camp that the girls attended this summer. She also wants to continue keyboard. And Sheila has an instrument that Delia can use, so there's no rental fee. I told her yes, she may, as long as she PRACTICES.

Cross your fingers. Maybe it will stick.

Yay! I play the violin. Stringed instruments are really hard to learn: after the first year or two, there's a plateau where the student often feels that they're just not progressing -- but they are! That's when a lot of students quit. Tell her to stick with it, and it'll totally be worth it!

Delia already tried the violin for a year. She was pretty good--better than Fiona--but at the time, she wanted to do something different than her sister, so she started keyboard.

My mom started playing the cello at age 10, and has now been playing it for over sixty years.

My youngest sister started playing the cello when she was about 10. The best part was that the cello never squeaks - so even beginning cellists sound pretty darn good/are easy on their family's ears. :)

I love the sound of the cello, since I grew up listening to my mom play it. I will be thrilled if she keeps playing, because it will be that generational tie.

Ooh, fabulous. I'm a professional myself; I started cello when I was seven and nearly gave it up when I was ten. Obviously, I'm glad I didn't.

Is she going to take private lessons, or group ones through school? Do you know what method will be used, etc? Personally, I highly recommend private lessons once a week, and stay away from the Suzuki method, though the books are good as a source of music.

I hope she has fun! I have loads more advice to give (about practicing, and preventing injuries, and motivation, and music), but I'll wait until you ask before giving it. :P

She just be playing through the school to start, but . . . come to think of it, I think my church's choir director plays cello. I will ask her for advice re: lessons.

We're already paying for keyboard lessons for Delia, and with karate on top of that, we can't afford to do much more.
