The human resources manager forwarded an e-mail to me this week. "It's not that I'm looking for you to leave us," she said, "but if they have night classes, then this is something that might interest you." It seems that a local community college is looking at developing a program to train people who want to be legal administrative assistants. They are looking for instructors. If the classes are offered at night, I could get back into teaching, while still keeping my job.

I called and spoke with the Dean at the school, and I came away definitely excited. They are creating a 21-25 credit certification program, and yes, the courses would be taught at night. Some of the classes would be classes they already have in their program, but they would be creating three new ones. One would be on written legal procedures, I forget the second, but the third that definitely made me prick up my ears was "Business English."

"I would definitely be interested in teaching that one," I told him. When I told him my credentials, he was pleased, too. I have a Masters in English (they were just looking for someone with some college experience), I've taught in the English and Composition Departments as well as in the Continuing Education Program at the University, I have worked thirteen years as a Legal Administrative Assistant, and I've created a web-based newsletter for our law firm. And I'm a published writer.

The course would be developed for next fall (2007). So I will be sending in my resume, and I'll probably be talking with them in February or so. I think I would probably be one of the strongest candidates they would find.

Go me. I think . . . I think I might enjoy getting my toe back into the water for teaching again. And if it works out, who knows what it might develop into? It might help some of my frustration about my present career situation. We'll see.

Good luck!

I meant to tell you also that I came across a copy of The Wild Swans unexpectedly. I'm very much looking forward to reading it as soon as I'm done with my current book.

Good luck! It does seem like you fit that position a LOT better than most people. It's nice to exceed the expected qualifications without being told you're "overqualified", too.

Peg, that sounds like an amazing thing concept/opportunity and I think you'd be amazing. I hope they realise that, if you decide it's something you want to do.

Wow, so cool! It would be such an interesting thing to do.

Chris has designed a bunch of technical writing curriculum, which includes business English -- and might be able to offer information, a syllabus or two, etc.

Which school would it be at? Or do you want to keep that under wraps for now?

I forget if I mentioned it, but my not-yet-my-new-apartment is about two blocks north of MCTC. Not that that has anything to do with anything...

Good luck!

Good Luck! It does sound great! Would this be work in addition to your full time job or instead of or a little of both?

In addition to my job, at least the first time out of the gate. After that, who knows what it might develop into?
