Welcome to my LiveJournal
Apr. 27th, 2002 01:12 amThanks to
johnwalton, I now have my own LiveJournal (:schnoogles John:). And schnoogles also to
heidi8 who also offered me the code.
I've kept a personal journal for over twenty-five years, but this is the first time I've ever tried a public journal. This Sunday, April 28, is my birthday, which seems a good reason to start as any. ("It's my birthday, my love, and we wants it!")
I'm nervous, yet excited, too. It's the same uneasy but anticipatory feeling I get whenever I try to put on an ambitious party: I run around like crazy trying to get things ready, simultaneously afraid that there won't be enough food and nobody will come. But hoping that I'll have a marvelous time.
So I've been busy for the last several days setting up my little corner of the LJ universe, hunting for icons to use, trying to get the hang of this html thang (I'm rather technologically challenged but willing to learn). It's been a fun and creative experience. I've chosen a cat as my mood icon because I've always loved cats. It must have something to do with being a writer--it seems that almost all the writers I know have one. Unfortunately, despite my inclination, I'm dreadfully allergic to them. So now I have an html cat that won't make me sneeze.
The central thing I've been thinking about the last several years is how to combine the process of being a creative writer with all the other aspects of my life that tend to crowd creativity out: motherhood, running a household, earning a paycheck, and simply relaxing and enjoying other things in my life, like reading or fandom. How do I balance it all?
I hope that keeping this LiveJournal will help me figure that out. I want to make it a true conversation and look forward to your comments.
Happy birthday to me!

Cheers,
Peg

Date: 2002-04-27 06:40 am (UTC)Remember what I mentioned in my note to you last week - you can post things which are personal entries, which only you can read - so you can upload your WIPs on there, and work on them, by using the EDIT entries function, wherever you are.
Good luck, enjoy!

Date: 2002-05-03 12:41 am (UTC)Didn't know Rob had been out of work--how depressing that is! I know others out of work from the computer industry downturn, and others staying in jobs they don't like because of the situtation.
Re: hearing writers' voices, I've noticed this particularly with Eleanor Arnason. And most of all, the first time I read _Sorcery and Cecilia_ I didn't know that the authors (Pat Wrede and Caroline Stevermer) had written alternating chapters, but I figured it out almost as soon as I started the second chapter. Although I had met Pat, I didn't have so much of a sense of her voice. But upon reading the second chapter I could just hear Caroline's voice, and so it continued in the other chapters from her character's point of view. I hardly needed the confirmation at a Rivendell discussion group meeting with the authors that I had indeed correctly identified the authors' chapters and methodology. --David Lenander, d-lena@umn.edu
